It didn't really hit Annie until she turned out the lights that evening on her first night ever living with Troy and Abed. She didn't hear the random violent sounds of her old neighborhood, the crying, the shots, the sirens. She didn't feel the nagging compulsion to check every single lock in the apartment again. She didn't have to double check her nightstand drawer to make sure her gun was still there in and ready for her to grab in an instant.
The building creaked the way older buildings do when they settle down for the night and for the first time in at least a year she didn't freeze up with the thought that the sound might've come from her kitchen. That someone might be in there moving around and stealing all her cutlery. Or worse. She didn't have to run through at least a dozen relaxation techniques to calm her high strung nerves and get some sleep either, which amazed her.
If she listened real hard she could just make out the sound of Troy or Abed (probably Troy) gently snoring through the walls. The sound was soft and peaceful and she let that peace wash over her until she half drifted off from how at ease it made her feel. It didn't hit her until just then that she felt incredibly and blissfully safe for the first time in a long time.
