A/N: Just a short one shot because I love these two. And I've had this song stuck in my head all week. Also, I don't own any of these characters. Enjoy :)
A young man sat fidgeting on a bench in the cool night air, buttoning and unbuttoning the same bottom button on his shirt. The starchiness of the collar made his neck itch, and the shirt rumpled awkwardly around his back. And the stupid bench back was pressing against his wings.
He shifted over, before moving back as his wings folded unnaturally. He was waiting for someone, the moon and stars giving off twinkles of light that illuminated the starkly empty doorway. She hadn't come.
He glanced up at the tree overhead, its leaves whispering in the wind. Small lights glimmered from between the branches, giving the yard a magical feel. They laced through the trees, squaring off a small patch of clean, green grass. Kicking off his stiff shoes, he sighed. Why had he even bothered?
But then - His head snapped up at the click of the door. He stood as a platinum-haired woman came rushing out, head down. She was tugging at a sleeve, trying to undo a button. When she looked up she gasped, then stared at the fairy lights and open grass. From a speaker he had hidden behind a tree soft music played.
"Warren, I… I'm sorry I'm late, it ran longer than I expected, I…" She seemed speechless. He smiled sheepishly at her. After a moment she smiled back.
"I know…" he began hesitantly, and cleared his throat. "I know you've been busy lately, and I'm not much use, my wings don't help in danger-" He continued before she could protest. "But. I wanted to spend some time with you."
She smiled, and he smiled back, and then they were both really happy. Taking a moment to undo her sleeve button, she stepped under the lights as he held out his hand. She took it, and he led her to the center of the grass. She rested both hands on his shoulders, and his on her hips. Her fingers brushed the feathers of his wings as they swayed back and forth. It tickled, but he didn't mind.
The lyrics drifted in on the wind as they danced in happy silence. Ororo close her eyes as Warren studied the beauty of her face.
"Dancing in the dark, with you between my arms. Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song." Warren embarrassedly remembered that he wasn't wearing shoes, but the grass was soft and cool beneath his feet and this way it wouldn't hurt if he stepped on hers. She wore beige sandals, her nails painted the same white as her hair. Jean shorts and a teal plaid shirt gave her a comfortable look that completely contrasted his nice shirt and pants. But her eyes were closed, and right now it didn't matter. He closed his too.
"When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath. But you heard it, darling, you look -" Warren whispered the next words, and Ororo smiled. "- perfect tonight." They danced for a long time, the moon shifting across the sky. No matter how chaotic life got, they would always have each other. And in that moment, everything was perfect.
A/N: Just a little reprieve from the chaos of mutant life. Please let me know what you think. Thanks for reading! :)
