It hurts to look at her. She thinks that he doesn't see her, doesn't watch her, but she is wrong. He sees her every day, and every moment. He sees her whenever he happens to catch a glimpse of himself in the mirror. They are her wide blue eyes that look out at him from the looking glass, her yellow hair, her made-up face that haunt him night and day. He can hardly stand to be in the same room as her.
Once, perhaps not so very long ago (not even history, only a blink in the past) he had been like her. Silent and longing, haunting every place with his anguish, daring only to exist as a mask and a ghost—he had been the phantom beneath the jewelled opera house, he had been the voice in the shadows. He could not bear to see another human being take his mask.
On that night, hadn't he seen her with his mask? From his hiding place, he had seen that little girl press the white half-face to her cheek, and hadn't he seen the way the smooth curves of the painted face fitted that little girl? Perhaps it was then that he knew. And when she had found him, later, she had kept the light from his face and given him his mask, but her lips had be smiling that twisted little smile that did not speak pity, but rather understanding. He thought that she would've preferred it if he had allowed her to keep the mask.
It had been ten years, and she had learnt how to wear a mask as well as her teacher. Truly, he could not have asked for a more attentive student. But the face of a human monster is a terrible thing. He wants to look beneath and find the beautiful, graceful little girl, but it hurts. It hurts to look at her. It hurts to see his own face staring back. He has always hated his own face more than anything.
He is relieved when Meg Giry runs. He vows to bury her when she is dead, and remember the girl she was.
A/N: After watching Love Never Dies, I really wanted some sort of resolution for Meg Giry and I was really upset at the way the relationship between the Phantom and Meg was portrayed, so I wrote my own little spin on their story. I don't own any of the characters, settings etc. All mistakes are mine.
