She knew this was going to be tough. The toughest thing she would probably ever do. Travelling to Berlin, the epicenter of everything the Nazis stood for. But sure, it was 1963. The war had been over for almost 20 years. Things were...different, right?

But this was too much. Being at the party at the US Mission. Being in the same room with Germans, many of whom were probably Nazi supporters or Nazis themselves during the war. Having to be nice to them at this party. All at once, her painful childhood memories came back to her. The vague memory of her parents leaving her behind to flee for their safety, only to be slaughtered during the Nazi invasion. Growing up as an orphan in war torn France. Feeling that void of never fully knowing her parents. All because of the Nazis.

And to stand here, to PRETEND that it didn't matter. No, this was too much.

Keeping her outer composure was easy to a point. After all, she was a Pan Am stewardess. Poise was part of the job description. Beneath her cool exterior, the little girl who mourned memories she never had and would never have needed to make a statement. And so, she sang Deutschland Uber Alles to them.

She had no problem singing the German lyrics. At least, she had no problem knowing the words. Fixing her gaze, she made a point of adding her French accent into every syllable. She'd already lived a lifetime of holding herself together through the pain. As she sang, she looked at the Germans in the room and thought, "You killed my mother and father. You destroyed my family. But you didn't destroy me. You CAN'T touch me. I know what you did, and no speech from any President will change that. I live on and damn you all to hell for what you did to me." Her voice crackled with emotion, but she pushed on to complete the verse. She had to show them the strength and will it took her to survive.
