Who am I?
Who am I?
I am no longer who I was. They captured me, beat me, and smiled at my pain. They gave me a number instead of my name.
So who am I?
They made me toil. Their hearts grew harder, as they watched us slave away, made us work harder.
Who was he?
Javert, the man who hated me so! Who made me retrieve the flag – gave me parole.
Who was he?
What did he have against me?
I stole a mouthful of bread. I ran when they pursued. I served my nineteen years. But still he called me a dangerous man.
A dangerous man!
Is that what I am?
Once free, I ignored parole. I became another man.
A free man!
Who was that man?
Monsieur le Major! A man of God! Loved, and saved, and free.
I may have hidden behind that name. Behind that wall! But that could not change who I was.
Who I really was!
Then there came a life more freeing for me – even though the men that knew my crime lurked around each corner.
I was a father!
Father to the light of my life – Cosette! One day I was alone, then suddenly she was there beside me.
But Javert still looked for me. Time could not forgive. It could not change how he saw me – what he called me.
He called me a dangerous man.
He called me 24601.
He called me Monsieur le Major when he thought I was such.
But Javert also called me by my name, my real name, when he was looking for me.
My real name!
So who am I?
Who am I?
I'm Jean Valjean!
