The Story of Us
People always asked them why they were together and what they saw in each other.
People had hounded them about being together as a couple, but they dealt with it because they thought that they were good together, even special.
They had understood and connected with each other in ways they had never done before they met one another. And that was their reason for staying together, an invisible connection that neither of them could understand nor ever begin to explain to everyone else.
So they stayed together, they took the strange look, even the comments and questions they received about their relationship because it was worth it. They were together.
When everything started to fall apart it was strange for both of them, but neither knew how to fix the crack that had started to form right under their feet.
She became more distant and cautious towards everyone as the feeling of isolation grew within her. He tried, he really did, but he didn't understand the internal struggle that grew larger and began to consume her from the inside out. She became more interested with her mermaid form, the same one he understood less and less. Pushing him further away as her friends tried to help her, including the new boy in town that he didn't get along with and was jealous of.
He started to become more interested in the café and money as she tried to balance the café with her own jealousy and struggle. He worked so hard to open Rikki's Café for her, but she wouldn't let him in. And then the red head began to show interest in him that she was denying him, but he wouldn't allow himself to let the red head in because he knew that would break them apart for good, something he dreaded.
They became different people, slowly drifting away from the one person they were trying desperately to keep near.
What broke them was one diving competition that involved one kiss that wasn't supposed to happen.
He got caught up in a moment of victory and kissed her, the red head that he didn't like or want to have in his life above the one he truly loved. It wasn't supposed to happen that way, she wasn't be there to witness such a mistake that he regrets. He was going to pretend it didn't happen and that it didn't mean anything because to him, it didn't. He hated himself for it.
She had seen the whole thing with her friends and it broke hew already unsteady heart. She didn't know how to react; she just knew that they needed to go their separate ways because she couldn't trust him after he did such an unforgivable thing. She didn't want to hear what he had to say. All she knew was that she needed to get away from him and quickly, so she did.
Now he was trying to slowly build up the trust that they had once had. He knew that he had betrayed her trust; he knew what he had done was wrong, but he also knew that he needed her because she's the only person he ever truly cared about. So he will go slowly, building trust and getting reacquainted with her because she is worth it.
She was focusing on herself, her friends, and her future. She knew that she still loved him and that was okay because it gave her hope that maybe, one day she would let him back in. But for now she was going to let her heart heal from the cracks and scars that were there. And, to her, that was okay because she was happy just being her and preparing for all the things that were ahead.
