What would you say if I told you I loved you?
You're my best friend, but...
Would you, could you, love me too?
Or would it be...
--AwkWard...--
The two friends stood on their beach. It had always been theirs. They may have shared it with their friends, but truthfully, it belonged to them. This was their safety zone. The place where they could always run to and know that there, the other would be with open arms and no questions to ask. This was their place where -oh so many- secrets had been shared, fears had been confessed -and in several of his cases- faced, and love was found. This place..it was so many things. As kids, it was their hideaway. As teenagers, it was their hangout. As lovers...well, he'd never know. She loved someone else. He looked at her, standing there with her eyes staring out at the ocean, so full of wonder and questions. He knew that look well. It was the one that he often gave her when she wasn't looking. Questions and what-ifs would run through his head. She turned around, and this time, she caught him looking.
"What is it?" There was an awkward silence in the air. She hated it. It comforted him.
"Come on, just tell me what it is! Please?"
"No," came his simply reply.
"Look, we've been friends for awhile now, and you know you can tell me anything. So come on, tell me what's the awkward thing."
Silence again...then-
"I...can't."
The girl gave an annoyed sigh.
"Why the hell not? I tell you everything."
"The price is too much."
"What price? I'm not asking for anything. I just want to know what it is!"
"You'll get angry and never speak to me again."
"No, I won't. I promise."
He ran his hand through his hair and sighed. He knew her well enough to know that she wasn't going to give up until she knew.
"You know, I'm not exactly great at admitting things..." he began, but she interrupted him.
"Grr, that's no excuse. Why don't you just say it?"
Change the subject, his mind told him.
"Hey, weren't you supposed to go to an interview today?"
"The college interviewer grew ill, so it was cancelled. Quit changing the subject. I wanna know!"
She stomped her foot in impatience and gave him her best puppy-face look. Oh, how he loved that look. He loved the way her eyes filled up with her fake sadness and the way her bottom lip would quaver ever so slightly. But she'd never know that. And he would never tell.
"No. Sorry. I can't. There's too much at risk."
"Gah...fine! I didn't want to know anyway," she said before getting up and stomping off, leaving him to his thoughts again. As soon as she was out of earshot, the only witness to hear his secret was the soft sea-breeze.
"The awkward thing is, well, I love you."
And thankfully,it told no one, but...
------------------Don't you just love those awkward moments?------------------
-Fin.
A/N #2- That last line...when I wrote it, I thought it sounded like it fit in nicely as the male character's last line. But looking back, I think it sounds good as the sea-breeze's last thought before it blows away. Meh, I dunno. You pick which ever flaots your boat. Anyways, R&R!
