Midnight Wanderings
Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter. (What? Were you expecting something funnier?)
Summary: Hermione witnesses a talk between Snape and Dumbledore. The exchange lets her see a part of Snape, the part full of pain and it breaks her heart.
A/N: I was inspired to write this after I read, "What Percy Saw" by YularaIt was a great story and I hope that you will think the same about this one.
'Damn,' Hermione thought to herself. 'I can't believe I forgot my notebook in Potions but if I'm going to study tonight I'm going to need that. Damn the OWL's coming up!' Hermione quickly dressed and slipped out of the common room hoping that no one would catch her. She reached the potions classroom but to her misfortune the light was on and the door was opened a crack. She could hear the voices of Snape and Dumbledore; she had never heard Snape sound so sad, so desperate.
"Severus, promise me that you will not try to do such a thing again."
"Why?! Nobody would miss me!"
"I would miss you, I need you Severus, the order needs you."
"I can't last much longer; I hear their screams at night. I haven't slept in days. It feels like I haven't slept in years."
"You know we can fix that, there are potions, spells."
"They're all useless!"
"Then we'll make something, the two of us."
"You know that you're too busy."
"What about the students. A war is coming and you're just going to leave them unprepared for the future. You know what could happen to them, no one can teach them of this as well as you."
"I see their faces everyday and I'm only reminded of their Mum's and Dad's, Aunt's, Uncle's…"
"Severus, if not for them then for me. You are the son that I never had."
He laughed bitterly at that, "The son you never had, you may consider me your son Albus, but you considered me below the others that you also gave this title."
"What was I to do? Expose him after I let him in the school knowing he was a werewolf!"
"Then you love your pride more then my life."
"Severus…"
"Fine I promise, but you should know that you hold high this war more then my soul."
"Severus I want you to say it or would you rather an unbreakable vow?"
"Like I need another one of those… I, Severus Snape, promise never to attempt to commit suicide again."
For some reason those words broke her heart and she ran down the cold dungeons to the safety of her bed, her notebook forgotten, tears falling from her eyes. Severus Snape quickly went to the door upon hearing running. He found no one but he bent to inspect the floor, finding a drop of water. 'A tear' he realized suddenly grateful that Albus had stopped him tonight.
A/N: I hope you liked it and remember to review! Aren't I getting a lot of stories out today?
