AN1: Based on a comment I made earlier on Tumblr which spurred thoughts on this topic. And sort of based on my dad because he never follows the instructions (although he's better at getting it right than Connor apparently is - lol!)
Summary: Connor and Abby are expecting, and when they buy an assembly-required crib, Connor decides to not follow the instructions... Fluffy and cheeky and fluffity fluffy!
AN2: ^^' Hope you enjoy!
Connor and Abby had gone shopping for a crib for the baby they were expecting. Abby was 7 months pregnant at the time. Connor, upon realizing that whatever crib they chose, they would have to do a bit of do-it-yourself work to put the thing together, volunteered to be the one hunched up on the floor in the nursery putting the crib together.
Abby didn't bother arguing, but despite Connor's genius she was pretty sure that before he was done, he would somehow end up hopelessly tangled in something relatively simple to anyone else. She loved him for it, though, so settled down to simply wait for the moment.
"Connor, don't you think you should read the instructions?" He grinned up at Abby, pulling open the package of parts for the crib, and shook his head.
"Nah, I've got this, don't need any instructions, love." She raised an eyebrow, and he pouted. "If I c'n build the ADD, I don't think I'll need any instructions for me own baby' s crib! See, it's not only simpler, but it's our baby's crib, and instructions're all… impersonal, yeah?" Abby laughed, and kissed his cheek before leaving the room.
"Alright, you win, Conn. I'll just be in the bedroom; put my feet up 'n read a book for a bit."
"Ta', love." He called over his shoulder as he crumpled and threw away the paper with step-by-step plans on it, and then turned eagerly to the mess before him.
"Where'd those screws go?"
"Aaaaabbbyyyyy!"
Abby hid her smile as she took her time putting her book down and following the sound of Connor's frustrated-and-confused tone of voice back to the nursery, where, sure enough, he was having trouble. It had been about a half hour since she'd left him to it, and while he'd gotten it to look somewhat like a crib, there were parts on the carpeting still and the crib didn't look exactly sturdy.
"I told you so." She couldn't help but say, even as she pulled the ball of paper out of the rubbish bin and flattened it out. He leaned against her leg, cheeks a little pink in embarassment. Abby smiled.
"Okay, okay, I admit it, you were right - now, 'elp me fix it please?"
"Okay, why don't you start by undoing whatever you've done?"
"Huh."
"Hm?"
"It looks amazing, Abbs."
"Next time you'll listen to me the first time, won't you?"
"Ehh… Oi!" She playfulyl swatted him in the back of the head and he gently grabbed her wrist before she could do it again. He was grinning and barely holding back laughter, though, so she leaned forwards and pressed a mostly-chaste kiss to his lips before she wrapped an arm around her husband's waist and gazed at the crib. With Connor's skill and her reading him the instructions, they'd finished assembling it in an hour's time. Connor chuckled.
"I think even baby Nicki likes his crib." Abby commented, feeling him kick. Connor kissed the top of her head and hummed quietly.
"I guess there's somethin' to be said for followin' directions. But not for everythin'." He added, after a moment, and she tilted her chin to see his eyes sparkling with his cheeky enthusiasm.
"I don't know about that." She said, smirking.
