A/N: Prompt from caskettwhovianoncercastillion. I hope I did this justice.
She's supposed to be married. She's supposed to be married to Richard Castle. She should be lying on his chest, his arms wrapped around her while they wait for a peaceful slumber that'll embrace them both after a tiring round of lovemaking. They should be together. He should be here.
But he isn't.
And he will never be.
But still, if she brought justice to other families, why shouldn't bring peace to herself and the remaining Castles?
Castle. Shit. She can't cry out here. She's at her desk and even if the bullpen is almost empty, she's at the precinct for crying out loud.
Well, it's not like they haven't seen her break down before.
But still.
So she stands. And goes for the break room.
It's been a year since she's had his coffee. Their coffee. She doesn't know why but it never tasted the same after the incident. Their coffee was full of love. But this? This coffee she's holding right now, cooling immediately, it's lifeless. Loveless.
She is loveless. Back to where she was before.
In that hellhole from which he saved her.
But there's no one to save her this time, is there?
She sips the lifeless coffee, almost spits it when she felt a familiar hand on her shoulder.
She… She knows that. No.
It can't be.
Can it?
She looks down sideways, then slowly turns around.
The same blue eyes. The eyes of the man she loved. Loves. But she doesn't smile.
Instead, tears streaming down her face, she shut her eyes. Not wanting to see whatever that is.
Keep your calm, Kate. You can't lose it. Not here.
Has it come down to this? Hallucinations? Is she that desperate? Well, probably.
No. She can't. Not here, Kate.
Not here. Not…
"Kate," she hears. "Kate, love."
And that breaks her. Those aren't just any voice. That isn't her mind playing games. She heard him. Him.
Slowly, she opened her eyes. Finally ready to see him.
And there he was. There they were. Together. At last.
