Hello! I hope you enjoy this, and if you do, please take the time to review it! It would mean a lot to me. :) I'd like to give a special thanks to Narnia4ever62 for being so supportive and overall fun to talk to! Enjoy!
While he was disappointed to be going back to school, Eustace Scrubb was also relieved. He'd spent the first month of summer holidays at his friend Davis' house, and had a grand time. Davis' father was a chocolatier, and with Eustace's sweet tooth he had been in a blissful state for the entire month. It was also very fascinating watching the chocolates be made, for he was the sort that liked to understand how things worked. Unfortunately, when the month was up, Eustace was shipped home. As much as he loved Alberta and Harold, he was glad to be escaping the oddities of their household, (to put it mildly). Plus, he couldn't wait to see his friends again. He was standing outside the school with his suitcase in one hand, when he heard a girl scream.
"Eustace!" Eustace turned around, and suddenly there were arms around his neck causing him to drop his suitcase. The girl stopped hugging him and stepped back, allowing Eustace to see who she was.
"Jill!" he exclaimed, and promptly pulled her back to him to give her a proper hug. "How was your summer?"
"Oh, nothing much, Scrubb. Rather dull, actually. How was yours? You went to Davis' for part of the time, didn't you?"
"Yes, it was great fun. I missed you though, Pole."
"I missed you too! Even more because over hols I had no one to talk with about Narnia! Thank goodness for your letters," she said with a bright smile. It suddenly struck Eustace that something was off about her. But what? He looked over her shoulder and saw that she had left her luggage behind her.
"Would you like help taking your luggage to your dorm?"
"Oh yes, that would be grand! Thanks." Eustace took up his suitcase in one hand and they each took one of hers, and they began to walk to Jill's dorm. As they walked, and she chattered away about her "boring" summer, Eustace realized what it was. Jill looked different. Older. While last year she had been a mousy, little girl, she now seemed years older. But the biggest difference was her hair. Before Jill's hair had been cut into a short, chin-length bob. It was straight, and an ordinary shade of brown. It was usually held back with a barrette of some sort. But now her hair was long, past her shoulders, and curly. It was loose, a rich brown, and it bounced as she walked. Jill no longer had the hair of a little girl, but of a young woman.
As they continued to walk, Eustace remembered watching Mr. Davis make the chocolate sculptures. To form the sculptures (which were usually for weddings) he had carefully shaved of bits of chocolate off, which would turn into soft, delicate curls. As they weren't needed he always gave them to Eustace, and they were delicious to eat. Eustace realized they looked just like Jill's hair, those chocolate curls. When they reached Jill's room, Eustace set down the luggage as Jill bent over her bag to find her key. Her hair shifted, and Eustace had a sudden urge to touch it. He slowly reached his hand out, and just as his fingers were about to grab a curl Jill whipped her head around.
"I can't find…what are you doing?" she asked with an eyebrow raised. Eustace looked down at his outstretched hand and blushed.
"Nothing," he said quickly, and drew back his hand.
"Okay…" said Jill perplexedly, and turned back around. Eustace sighed. It seemed that these chocolate curls would be much harder to get.
