One second they were walking along the edge of the water looking for signs of the creature, the next second a tentacle shot from beneath the surface, wrapping itself around Sam's ankle. He screamed as it dragged him off his feet, long barbs digging deep into his flesh and yanking him towards the water.

Dean dove, unsheathing his knife on the way, landing across Sam's hips and driving the air from both their lungs. Dean's added weight didn't even slow them down. Sliding farther down, he slashed through the tentacle with the deadly sharp blade. Another agonized shriek and Sam fell limp underneath him, Dean knew he had to move fast before more tentacles surfaced seeking retribution.

Still gasping for air, he slammed the knife back into its sheath as he stood and slid his arms under Sam's, dragging him away from the edge of the water.

When he felt it was safe, he carefully laid Sam flat, cushioning his brother's head with his over-shirt. A few minutes later, Sam snapped awake.

"Easy," Dean said softly.

Sam lay back while Dean's gentle hands finished the makeshift bandage.

"Thanks Dean," he whispered.

Too close Dean thought, heart hammering in his chest.
