Chapter One

She stood watching the flag raised with pride, pride for her people. At how far they have come, where they were, what they were. A huge smile spread on her face as the four transhumans, "anomalies", and transgenetics raised the flag of their people, of their kind.

A hand slipped into hers, to enjoy the moment with her. She turned to smile back at the person, but felt it slipping as she saw the face that smiled back at her. It was not who she expected. She looked down at their hands, glad that she still had her gloves on at least. She looked up from their hands to look around her, at her people. She kept searching until her eyes fell on the one whom she searched for.

She thought she saw anger in his eyes, before his mask once again came over his face, the one she was all too familiar with. He then turned heading towards the door off the roof. She starred after him with a confused look.

She looked over beside her as she realized the man beside her who held her hand was talking to her.

"What? What were you saying?" she asked him to repeat, not understanding her current feelings.

"I said, I like what you have done," he answered, giving her hand a squeeze.

They stood there holding hands, until they were the only two that remained on the roof.

She looked around her as she realized it. "Look, I gotta jet, I have some stuff that I need to check. You should get out of here before the bio-toxins start getting to you."

He gave her an odd look. "If I didn't know any better, I would think you were trying to get rid of me?"

She tried to give him a convincing smile, but it felt weak to her. "I gotta go, I'll talk to you later." With that she turned to leave the roof. She rushed down the stairs, towards headquarters. She looked around not seeing him. She started heading towards the door, and about ran into him.

"Hey, I was looking for you," she smiled. "How's the arm?"

"It'll live," he said, unconsciously rubbing it. "I was looking for you too."

It was then that she noticed that he was carrying a bag. "What's that," she asked frowning.

"I'm leaving," he answered simply.

"What? Why?"

He shrugged. "You don't need me here, you're doing perfectly fine. There's plenty of X's to help out, more arriving each day."

"But, Alec..." she trailed off, trying to think of something, anything to make him rethink his decision.

"No buts Max, this is something I need to do," Alec said determinedly. "I have others in my unit that have yet to check in here, that I need to find. To let them know about Biggs and Cece."

Max nodded her head sadly looking down, understanding. She knew she felt the same about finding her own siblings. She looked up, into his hazel eyes. "Promise me you will come back once you're done?"

He nodded. "I promise." He then used his good arm to give her a hug. "Take care Maxie," he said softly as she returned the hug. He then walked back out of the door.

Max stood rooted in her spot as she watched him walk out of life, not sure if she would ever see him again.
