I don't have to look up when she joins me on the grass. The highway out of Sunnydale lays underneath us, cars whizzing by to get to work, to go home, to find the one thing that's missing from this overly-dark town.

Peace.

"I'm so scared Oz," she mumbles. Her long, cream-colored blouse is wrinkled and I can tell she's been sitting on it. Her sweater is dirty and her eyes are bloodshot. "I don't like this at all." she clutches the cross around her neck and sighs. "Lord, give me the strength."

"The strength to what?" I ask. "Escape? Run away? Start a new life away from everyone you love and everything you know?"

"The strength to heal," she whispered. "Violence, of any kind, is wrong. And when these people prey on children, on the innocent, it's just more wrong than anything you can ever imagine. I must stop them."

I sigh heavily. "They took everything from me, you know."

"Who? The creatures of the night?"

"The vampires."

She shook her head. "Don't use that word."

"That's what they are. Monsters. They killed her. Made her one of them."

"Her soul wasn't bad though Oz. You have to know that."

"I don't know anything anymore." I stood up and began walking along the edge.

"Oz. Oz, what are you doing?"

"Walking." I stopped at a super steep edge and looked out. The cars were flying, the flags and ribbons tied on their antenna flying in the wind.

"Do you ever think about jumping?" I asked.

She jumped up, clutched her cross with one hand and blessed herself with the other. "Good Lord Oz! Suicide is--"

"A mortal sin. I know." I lifted a foot jokingly. "Sunnydale is full of sinners. Maybe I should join them."

"Oz, no. Please."

"Would you even care?"

"Of course I would."

"Do you care because it's be or because it's a death in general?"

"Oh, Oz..." she touched my arm and I pulled away, slipping just a bit on the moist grass. I had to grab the railing to steady myself, but I managed.

"Promise me Oz." she said in a small voice. Her hand was reaching out to me, risking her own life to save mine.

I sighed. I cursed a lot and watched her shudder, then kneel and pray for me. When she stood up, I almost jumped. Then I relented. "All right. I promise."

She smiled weakly. "Will it ever get better?"

We headed back down to the safety of the road and I looked at her. "I honestly don't know Faith."
