Take a Deep Breath

Jacob didn't know why he even went. It would probably just be painful. But some force compelled him to put on a dress shirt and tie his best friend get married to the enemy he was sworn against since birth.
He took a deep breath before he slipped into the church just as they were exchanging vows. The Cullen family stared at him with confusion and caution, and her fiancée…husband, soon...glared at him. He ignored them and managed a smile for Bella. She started crying, and took a step towards him, but he shook his head, and sat in an empty pew. She nodded, and turned back. He watched as she threw her arms around her husband, and kissed him. His heart wrenched. It was painful, to see her do that, but he was happy for her. Someone like her deserved to be happy like that…even spend an eternity with him, if she could.
He took a deep breath as he intercepted the happy couple as they were stepping onto the cement sidewalk. He felt the tension in the air, heard Alice and Emmett Cullen growl, saw Edward bare his teeth. His eyes were for Bella as he slipped a white envelope out of his pocket, and handed it to her.
"Congratulations." He said quietly, and his lips curved into a small smile. She sobbed, throwing herself on him and squeezing him. He pried her off, and held her at arms length.
"Take care of yourself, now. I won't be able to." He said, and she nodded, wiping her eyes. He turned Edward, and took another deep breath.
He offered his hand for Edward to shake, and his hand was clammy.
"Congratulations…Edward." He said slowly, and Edward nodded, before shaking his hand and smiling a little. Bella and the other Cullens gasped.
"Thank you Jake," Bella whispered, "Take care of yourself." He nodded.
"Sure, sure." As they got into the car he felt the Cullen family staring at him. He nodded, but then Edward froze, and looked at the parking lot, stiff. Bella's head popped out, and she stared. Jacob looked at them, and the pack padded forward in an upside down 'V', before sitting down just behind the car.
It was a moment before they stuck their noses into the air and began howling. Esme and Alice Cullen began dry sobbing.
Jake took a deep breath and let out the sob he didn't know he had. Bella cried and got out of the car to hug him. He wrapped his arms around her, and sobbed into her hair. The wolves kept howling.
"The wolves are feeling Jacob's pain…they decided to come and give Bella a farewell." Edward was explaining to his family, and Esme let out another dry sob.
Jake let go over her, face wet and shiny red.
"I'll see you around." He whispered, and Edward's hand clamped on his shoulder. He turned to him. Edward's expression was friendly.
"Thank You." He said, and Jake nodded, stepping back and letting the couple into the car. He phased into his shaggy other self and the entire pack took one big howl as Bella threw her bouquet threw the sunroof.
All it took was one deep breath to let go.
