Pioneer

He is the one whose smile rises first at daybreak, on the verge of unexplored lands. He rings the signal in the morning light; he is to be followed, without rest, to the fall of the day. The Earth will crumble before his will to stop — for what he sees he desires, far beyond the horizon. What is yet to be discovered, he already claims as his own.

He belongs to the kind that doesn't look back. He is the man of the acres watered in sweat and blood — the lands still untouched by him are like dreams, and they all matter most while they are being conquered. What comes after his passage, he does not care about. Sometimes the earth grows green, sometimes dust, ever piling on the sacrifices.

He is a conqueror of hope, he steals to the future, unaware of how much he values the present. To him, no treasure is worth the act of unearthing it. He yells to the world what is to do next; he knows what he wants, he knows how, and how fast. There is no way to understand; it just has to be done, no matter if it means losing, and losing him above all.

By the time the gold is in plain sight, he is already miles away. He yells to follow.

It's easier to her; she feels the same call to this rush, the vocation to embrace pride and glory. What was harder to ignore, time made meaningless — with every step, she has learnt to leave behind the pleading voices, the angry faces, the fleeting sense of achievement each novelty brought. In her walk, she is in tune with the cold breath of the wind.

The miles changed her more quickly than he changes his mood, alive and aflame in the bleeze of discovery. She still watches over their journey with more wisdom. Every minute, there are new choices to be made; when he drives them all to danger, it is her to quietly correct their path.

While her eyes always see farther, she has to stay hidden; she is a mute compass, ever in the shadow of her visionary leader. She holds reason, ambition, and the perspective of a goal. Maybe, somewhere. Even so, she does not only have to follow — today she wants to.

She does not choose. Today, in silence, she treads on everyone's dreams.

The first step crushes her own.
