A girl and a boy, both in seventh grade, sat in a crowded movie theater. The boy, Davis Motimiya, was absolutely entranced by the movie, Barney the Evil Slaying Beast XII. The girl, Kari Kamiya, was considerably less interested. In fact, she was quite bored and was making no effort whatsoever to hide it. She didn't want to hurt Davis's feelings, that was why she was on this date in the first place, but she guessed that Davis was dense enough that he wouldn't notice her yawns. In fact, she thought wryly, he probably wouldn't notice if I screamed in his ear, he's so focused on the movie. How does he actually like it? It has no plot whatsoever. Why did I let him con me into this in the first place?
The next day, as she had known he would, Davis bragged all over the school that Kari was going out with him. She couldn't stand his loud, meant-to-be overheard conversations with her—or TK's quiet, hurt looks. She wondered almost constantly what the heck she had been thinking when she consented to go out with him. Sure, she didn't want to hurt his feelings by rejecting him, but she had hurt TK just as much as she would have hurt Davis. And who, really, did she care more about?
Suddenly, she remembered one day, exactly eight years ago. Looking up at a piece of mistletoe, high above her head, and feeling TK press a shimmery pink pebble into her hand. Why? They had been so young that they thought that that was what a kiss was. She had accepted the Could it bind her, the way a real kiss could? She supposed so, for it is the meaning behind an action that counts more than the action itself. And in taking the pebble, she had made a promise. And promises are forever, no matter what the circumstances at their making.
So just as suddenly Kari knew where her heart truly was. And she also knew how to express the strongest wish of her heart. Grabbing some money from her dresser, she rushed off to the mall and its small shop for geology enthusiasts.
A few days later, she was at the Christmas party the Digidestined were having at the Kamiya apartment. Tai and Sora were eying the mistletoe while talking to each other, Izzy and Joe were both competing for Mimi's attention, and Davis and TK were staring balefuly at each other over the cookie table. Suddenly Yolei called out, Time for presents!
Kari got out her gifts for each of them, and gave them in turn. All except for TK's present. Carefully positioning herself, she called to TK. He came quickly over, and said half-teasingly but with a hurt tone, So Davis's girlfriend deigns to give me a present?
She handed him the small box, and he quickly tore off the wrapping to reveal a small jewelry-type box. He lifted the lid to reveal a polished piece of citrine, light twinkling from its yellow depths. He stared at her in puzzlement, akin to his bewildered face so many years ago. Look up, TK. He did so.
Recognition dawned on him, and he said, A real one now, Kari? She nodded, and they raised their lips to each other.
Many years later, when they were married, their rings were set with a piece of citrine and a shimmery pink pebble. No one else knew why.
