The Noire Mouton brigade was heading back to Radiata after an assignment, marching through the Dova region. Cross' features were fixed in a scowl, and even now he still stomped with each step.
"Tch, guild's work," he muttered.
"Guild's work, captain?" one of the knights asked. "Those beasts were as fearsome as any foe."
"Fearsome, hah!" Cross scoffed. "Child's play. I've had enough of this. Where's the excitement? The honor! The glory!" Cross balled his hands into fists, set them rigidly by his sides, and stalked onward.
Meow.
All but Cross' footsteps paused. Cross made a show of clearing his throat, and the march of steel-clad men resumed.
Meow.
The knights stopped again. When he no longer heard their footsteps behind him, Cross turned about and scowled at the lot of them. They had broken formation, two in the back were kneeling.
"There's a cat, captain~" Charlie sang.
Cross stalked around the rest of his brigade to the kneeling pair. "Of course there's a cat; what else would it be?" he spat. "This is a waste of time. Onward!"
The Noire Mouton brigade resumed formation as their captain glowered at them from behind. Before Cross could resume his place at the front of the formation, he felt something brush against his leg. He huffed and glanced down at the mongrel. It had sleek white fur, save the black at the end of its tail, and bright blue eyes staring back into his.
"Run along now," he muttered to the cat, and made his way back to the head of the Noire Mouton.
They had resumed their march, but hadn't traveled far before one of the knights remarked, "Looks like we have a new captain."
Cross glanced over his shoulder with a huff. "What are you blabbering about?"
"The cat, captain," Charlie called from the back.
Cross looked behind them to where the cat had been. It mewled, but not from where he had left it, from right beside him. Cross furrowed his brow. He knelt beside the cat. "What do you want? I have nothing for you."
The cat bunted his leg, and when he didn't move it brushed its whole flank against him. Cross bent forward and scooped the cat into his arms.
"What are you going to do, captain?"
"I don't know, find it a home in the city, I suppose." Cross stood and turned back to his brigade. "But if any one of you breathes a word of this, I'll have you fired. Are we clear?"
"Yes, captain!"
Author's Note.
Alex says there needs to be more Cross fanfiction. I agree. But I'm sure someone out there could do better than I did. xD Thanks for reading. :3
