He stared at the broken cup, his heart and mind whirling with heart-rending terror of Belle's screams. Tears stung his eyes, but he refused to let them fall before any one, even her. She hadn't just shattered the token of her affection to which he'd clung to all these centuries. Her screams were slowly but surely shattering him. She was broken herself, and he could not fix her or return her or her love. Rumpelstiltskin shut his eyes tightly and briefly, then, he fled. Belle and the cup were not the only things broken: She had broken him, as well.
