Blanche twirled the delicate, antique parasol in her gloved hands. She kept a smile upon her lovely face as, inwardly, she fumed. Silver reflected off of muskets in the morning sunlight and blazed into her eyes, making them shine even brighter than her quiet fury. Dorothy didn't know what she was missing by refusing to come to this Confederate Belles celebration!
She sashayed along with the other belles to meet their soldiers as they returned "home" from war. She waved a lace handkerchief before her face. A soldier stopped and bow before her. She smiled at him and curtsied.
He took her hand. "May I just say, ma'am," he said in a pathetic attempt at a Southern drawl but also in a deep, rich voice that sent shivers racing up her spine, "that it was a pleasure serving in this ol' war an' killin' those Yankee devils long as I remembered that there was such beauty back home that I was fightin' for?"
She laughed, a soft, twinkling giggle, and met his eyes as he kissed the back of her gloved hand. She froze. He smiled, his mustache tickling her hand and one corner beginning to peel off. She beamed at her lover's disguise and, forgetting herself for a moment, kissed her then and there.
Whispers immediately started, but soon, some belles were dancing with their soldiers and other lovers already beginning to kiss. Blanche's smile grew. She giggled again and kissed Dorothy once more. They had started something grand!
The End
