Waiting

One day, I had said. Just one.
I looked around me hopefully, but saw nothing – not even a hint of movement. I sniffed the air...humans...a few yards away. Nothing abnormal. I had already had my fill, so I wasn't going to bother...but they did smell quite tasty...
No. I was waiting for her.
...although part of me knew it was in vain.
I had known that day, when that dark haired kid didn't return to us...that day had been her death sentence.
Why hadn't I stopped her? Why hadn't I told her what I already suspected?
...her friend was dead, or he had betrayed her. I could see it written across Riley's face that night.
It wouldn't have mattered, I suppose. There had been some kind of strong, unseen bond between those two...something magnetic about them. She would have gone even if I had warned her.
12:00 AM
"Bree..." I sighed, shaking my head. Poor girl.
I leapt up to the tree branches, and onto the closest building, scaling its side effortlessly. It was time to put the past...that dark, and troubled past though it was...behind me and head toward my future. I knew nothing of this second-life, and having thrown aside all of Riley's lies, I began to experiment...to investigate.
I knew it was a dangerous road to go alone, especially after Bree's warning of the "Vampire Police," but I didn't trust other vampires for guidance. I couldn't...not yet.
Still, I had caught scent of a small group near the park earlier that day – perhaps if I observed them from a distance, I could learn a small amount. I could always make myself loathingly invisible if I were to fall into any danger, of course. I would be safe enough.
I decided to follow their cold trail, and let it lead me to a new world.
