She was, she knew it, and she was afraid. Shaking her head, she could not believe it. Sam had felt a need to rid herself of her fear. That was why she had ventured to the store. Either way, she was not going to worry. Eight years of working in the Stargate program and she had no bills, not to mention the other nearly 20 years of her life dedicated to the Force. All she did was save her money. Now she had a good-sized mountain of it.

Sam Carter was late. She was way, way late, by a good three weeks. Why she had put off getting a home pregnancy test this long, she could not say. Mostly, she supposed, it was because she could not be sure who the father was. That was the crux of her fear.

After she broke up with Pete, after her father passed away, it seemed natural to fall into General O'Neill's arms. He told her he did not think he would be her commander much longer, that he might get transferred out of the Mountain if General Hammond had his way. She had not cared, then. Comfort was what she wanted, Jack's comfort. Calling him by his rank was something Sam had been trying not to do anymore, on his request. She wouldn't say it was an order, since he had actually asked her to call him Jack, while they were still in bed the next morning.

The timeframes of her last dalliances with the men were close. Four days apart, to be exact. Her grief had been too much to keep her away from Jack, the one man she had loved from afar, for far too long. As to birth control, she had not given it a thought. Pete and she had been tested because they were going to be married. They were both clean and she knew Jack was, in fact, had known that she herself was clean. It was a hazard of her job to have her blood tested almost every time she breathed air. Getting tested again was for Pete's benefit.

Now, General Landry was in charge. Now, she had two blue lines to contend with. As to the father of her baby, she would talk to Jack, first. Honestly. If she had to, after the baby came, she would deal with Pete.

Sam stood, smiling and headed into the living room for the phone. Three things she knew with certainty: She could raise this baby, with the father or not, she was not afraid any longer, and she was late.
