Mal sits on the ledge looking like she hasn't a care in the world, and Dom's heart skitters, stops. No, no, no. Please, please, not this.
you're waiting for a train
She kicks off her shoes and Dom's shaking; he's vibrating with the fear that this time he won't be able to talk her down. He needs her, he can't live without her, but Mal is so broken, so shattered. He tries to pick up the pieces, he tries to put her back together.
He's terrified he's failing.
He can't stop trying.
a train that will take you far away
She speaks and he doesn't hear, doesn't see. Words pour from him, frightened, pleading, and all he can think is that this time he won't be able to save her.
He thinks that she wouldn't need saving at all if it weren't for him.

Mal is prepared. This isn't contemplative fingers around a kitchen knife; it isn't reckless or impulsive. It's careful calculation and hard resolve and Dom is drowning in his guilt.
He wanted to save her and instead he broke her, and Dom's never been more sorry for anything in his life.
She looks at him and she's so beautiful it breaks his heart.
but you don't know for sure
They have two wonderful children who need their mother, but Mal won't listen.
To her, they aren't real. Projections, ghosts, the promise of what is (but isn't) waiting for her on the other side.
but it doesn't matter
He can't live without her. He wouldn't know how. Mal is his life and his heart and his soul. She is the woman he's already lived a lifetime with.
All he wants is the chance to grow old together one more time.
All he wants is to watch their children grow up.
All he wants is to be with this woman who is his everything.
All he wants is to fix what he's destroyed.

Dom has never been so afraid in his life. Mal is strong and stubborn and so very certain. He's begging, pleading, don't do this don't do this I needyoupleasedon'tgo and it's so completely futile.
She looks at him with those beautiful eyes and Dom sees everything he ever needed and everything he ever lost.
Mal slips from the ledge so quickly, so smoothly, that it hardly seemed like the end of anything at all.
The darkness swallows her, and everything in Dom just stops.
The world freezes for one heartbreaking instant, and in a moment of crystal clarity he follows her into the dark.
It doesn't matter if she's right or wrong, because Dom can't live without her.
So he won't.
