Kai thinks that Hal's tall figure is like a shield. Because when something bad is going to happen, Hal would always take one step ahead, giving Kai his back.
And seeing Hal's broad shoulder from behind is somehow giving him a feeling of protection.

And when things go bad for real, Hal's shoulder will always be there, shielding him from possible harm.
Even if it were raining bullets.
He'll be there.

But even so, Kai doesn't like it when Hal's being over protective. He wants to show him that he is really capable with this job. Kai has chosen it himself after all.
Thus why Kai will never have any doubt when he went ahead, facing the criminals; face to face. He brings his arms as his weapon.

Kai will smile brightly as if he's done something good in the end. Even though he smiles when he's laying on the bed of their office's clinic. Hal wants to hit him upside the head so badly but, eventually he gives up when he sees that innocent smile.

Kai will never know, what makes Hal afraid the most when they have to do a bust.
Hal doesn't want him to appear. He doesn't like it. At all.
Because when he appears, all the lights he adores from Kai's eyes will be vanished. Replaced with a hollow of black.
He doesn't need that. He needs the light from those eyes. Moreover when he's in the middle of scene that probably will lead to drips of blood and rains of bullets.
He need lights and it only comes from the eyes of him, good-for-nothing.
