As I have been absent for so long I am attempting to appease my readers with this one-shot! Enjoy... but grab a tissue first!

This is War

Cross Academy and the dream of co-existence had shattered ten years ago. Vampires had mounted a massive attack on the Hunter Association. Hundreds died on the first day of the war. Since that day the world was cleaved in two. Vampires against Vampire Hunters. Zero Kiryuu had been dragged from Cross Academy and under the eye of Toga Yagari was trained to be the general of the Hunter Army. Toga had been assassinated eight months ago. It was then that Zero and his second in command and best friend Kaito had made the decision to peruse peace. It would mean getting in contact with Zero's ex-lover, Kaname Kuran.

The hardest part of this war had been the separation from Kaname. Zero had loved the pureblood fiercely and deeply. But their status in their societies had forced them to be enemies. Time and again Zero had tried to find Kaname on the battle field but had failed. Just as he had been failing to make contact to make peace. The war had gone had too far.

Kaname strapped on his leather armor. He never wore anything too bulky it was just a precaution as he was usually the target of attacks. He looked at himself in the mirror. His face was gaunt, his cheekbones were so sharp. He hadn't really put his heart into this war for the last few years. He couldn't help but think that Zero hated him and if he didn't have Zero's love then he felt no need to live. They had been separated so harshly. It still hurt to think about it.

These last eight months Kaname had been trying to make contact for peace. He was sure it would be useless because a radical group had acted on their own and assassinated Toga Yagari ruining all chances at peace.

Sighing Kaname drew his sword. He might as well get this over with. Each battle he went into he prayed a silent prayer that he would see Zero. If he could just talk to the Hunter he was sure he could remind him of their love and how nice peace had been.

Zero had been engaged in a brutal knife fight alone in the forest. He had hoped to circle the main battle and sneak into the Vampire camp to search for Kaname. He had run into a scout and they had battled.

But Zero was the victor. The noble dissolved into ash. The Ex-Human leaned on a tree to catch his breath. He couldn't take this much longer. It made him nauseous. A rustling in the underbrush made him draw the Bloody Rose and look up. His heart shuttered painfully in his chest.

"Kaname." Zero smiled at his ex-lover. "I never dreamed I'd see you here."

"Same." Kaname also smiled. He had not seen Zero since the war started and now to see him standing so close Kaname felt his heart beat erratically in his chest.

"It's so nice to see you again. I'm happy." Zero loosened his grip on his gun. "You know when this war started I wanted no part in it. But after Yagari passed I was forced to take the lead on the Hunter's side. I vowed to end it so we could be together again."

Tears filled Kaname's eyes. "To hear those words from you Zero I'm so happy. I've tried so hard to get in contact with you."

"Then let's end it tonight. I don't want to fight you ever."

"Yes." Kaname started to walk toward Zero and he smiled as he saw Zero start to spin his gun in his showy way of re-holstering it.

A gun was held straight and sighted on it's target. The trigger was pulled and the perfectly aimed bullet flew through the air. Kaname's eyes widened in shock at the sound of the gun.

The last thing Zero saw was Kaname's shocked face. Then it was all black. A quick, painless death. Thoughts of being with his lover again and having peace still clung to his mind.

Kaname was frozen as he saw Zero dissipate into ash. Fury built up in his chest and he turned his head to the place the bullet had been fired from. He was next to the assassin in an instant. The youth struggled and yelled. "Why did you shoot!?" Kaname growled.

"I knew he was a traitor! He had to die! Fuck you vamp!" The Hunter thrashed about on the ground trying to hurt Kaname but the Pureblood had the boy's gun and was pinning him to the ground. The boy hollered for help. A few minutes later Kaito dashed in on the two with his gun raised.

"What the fuck!" He leveled his gun at Kaname.

"I'm not going to kill the idiot." Kaname hauled the boy to his feet and shoved him at Kaito. "I suggest you put him on trial for killing your leader." Kaname fixed his eyes on Kaito.

"What do you mean?"

"He killed Zero. We were discussing peace when that brat shot him!" Kaname screamed hysterically.

"He deserved to die! Wanting to make peace with the likes of you." The young Hunter spat at Kaname. The Pureblood sidestepped it.

"You what?" Kaito pinned the boy to the tree.

"I shot the mother fuck down! We should have done it years ago! He didn't deserve to lead, the filthy leech."

"Shut the fuck up!" Kaito let his anger get the better of him and he smashed the boy's head against the tree knocking him out. Then he turned to Kaname.

"Zero's really dead?"

"Yes." Kaname looked over his shoulder at the pile of ashes that had been his lover. His chest felt tight.

"Oh shit" Kaito felt loss well up in his heart. "He didn't deserve it he's been trying to make peace with you but he kept getting turned away by vamps." Kaito rubbed his face.

"It shouldn't have happed. I was seeking Zero for peace as well."

"Well shit. We both fucked up good. This probably means the assassination attempts weren't from you." Kaito looked down at the boy. "To think there was such discontent on our side." Kaito sigh deeply. "You know he never got over you. He fought with hope that you'd be the one to kill him or he'd be able to make peace with you."

Kaname remained silent and told himself not to cry.

"I guess I'm in charge in then" Kaito put his hands on his hips. "Well Kuran. You still want peace?"

"Of course." Kaname whispered still looking at the ashes.

"Done. I'm going back to head quarters to issue a cease-fire. Vampires are no longer our enemies." Kaito stuck his hand out.

"I'll do the same." Kaname shook the hand.

"Thank you. It's-" Kaito chicked up for a moment. "It's a shame Zero can't see this."

"A shame indeed." Kaname heaved a sigh. "It's a shame it ended this way." Kaname looked over his shoulder to Zero's ashes. His heart was numb. Peace was theirs but he had lost the one thing he had been fighting for.
