AN: So I decided to write a short little story, inspired by the fact I am in Florida right now! I don't know why I needed to write this but I did.
I sit by the pond in silence, observing the way that the water ripped as a bug cascaded on the silky surface. I close my eyes for a few long moments, taking in the warming rays of the sun. I hear a cat padding up besides me while I sun on the warm grass.
"Goodmorning, Yellowtail." chirps an excited Grassheart. I nod at her, acknowledging that she was there. She sits besides me, and I nuzzle her softly.
"Goodmorning, my love." I say back to my mate. Cicadas sing wildly above me, and the birds create lyrics to the bug's sweet song.
My clan is healthy. It has been a great hot season. The days were slowly getting cooler, the heat becoming more bearable to most cats. However, I loved the heat and humidity. It felt great on my pale orange fur.
Grassheart looked at me, her green eyes shining in the morning light. She was one of PondClan's gentlest warriors, a skilled hunter and tracker. I was much like her. I loved to hunt and climb the towering palm trees.
I turned my head to her, nuzzling her flank. "I love you," I murmered, hushed by the creatures above me. She purrs softly until a gecko catches her eye.
"Shhh." she says quietly, her voice resembling a snake so much that, if I did not know she was beside me making the gentle noise, I would have sworn it was a creature ready to strike me. Grassheart uses me to hide behind, and I stay as still as I can. She stalks her prey, light and ready.
Finally, Grassheart strikes, quickly dispatching her prey. It is a good sized gecko at that, a brown color with amber eyes. It's eyes looked a lot like mine, reflecting the light despite the dullness of death.
"Want to go to the border with me?" I ask her softly. She agrees and we walk along the border. Sunclan lays beyond this heavy scent mark.
We continue on a ways, leaving scent marks as we go and watching out for a Sunclan patrol. We reach the Tree of Souls when we hear a startling cry from the trees above us. "Sunclan attack!"
I feel a weight on my shoulders which I stumble down from. A Sunclan cat by the name of Willowclaw pins me down, in which I jump up and he stumbles off. "Get off our territory!" I hiss wildly at the cats. I leap at another cat, landing squarely on her back and pinching her neck with my teeth. She thrashes wildly until knocking me off, but I manage to leave a few good scratches on her with my back claws before she does.
I send the cat off with a claw on the muzzle, blood spilling wildly. She runs back to her side of the border. I recognize the patrol's leader as Brightfang, who is on top of my mate with claws ready to sink into her soft neck. I yowl and bowl my head into Brightfang all too late.
I see Grassheart from the corner of my eye. Her neck is bleeding profusely along with claw marks covering her soft grey fur. I claw at Brightfang, leaving scars over his pelt. He growls and rears, trying to shake me off. He succeeds, and I stumble to the ground. I feel his claws rake my sides and legs, and a pool of blood forms on the ground. I watch as Brightfang stands over me, and I am helpless. The wounds on me are too much, they hurt terribly. I notice that his claws are enforced with teeth. They almost look like dog teeth, from a twoleg's pet dog or something. That is how he overpowered me and Grassheart so easily!
I look at him, terror in my eyes. Then, I look at Grassheart, who lays still on the grassy forest ground. As claws sink into my throat, I close my eyes, the memory of my mate my last thought as I drift into nothingness.
