Sweethearts
Leonardo couldn't stand it any longer.
The meaningful glances, the half-hidden touches, the soft giggles just out of sight; and of course the more obvious muffled noises that escaped under their door late at night.
Raph and Mikey had been together as a couple for months now, and Leo had finally accepted this was the new way of things. He didn't mind so much; after all, they had opened the possibility that he might actually be able to tell Donatello he'd loved him for years.
Leo snorted to himself. Yeah, right. He was the so-called Fearless Leader; he'd led them into battle more times than he could count; he had bravely stared down petty criminals and evil villains; and he would easily face a horde of Foot soldiers alone before walking in Donnie's lab and asking him on a date.
He sighed, rubbing his face tiredly with one hand. Tomorrow was Valentine's Day, as Mikey had not-so-subtly reminded him over breakfast, and he was certain tomorrow had to be the day he found enough courage to speak. He'd panicked over what to get, what to say, until he'd seen a display of candy hearts in the grocery and inspiration had struck. It was perfect!
Or, it would be perfect if he could find the exact one he needed. He sighed once more, glancing dejectedly at his feet. He'd been through seven boxes of the stupid candy and hadn't found the one he wanted- no, needed. He only had two unopened boxes left, and he was beginning to despair. What if he couldn't find the one? Maybe he could try another store; there was an all-night grocer on Fifth and Main, if he hurried he could be back before the others woke-
His frantic train of thought was broken as a quiet rap sounded on his door. He leapt to his feet, scattering the candy and disrupting the neat colour-coded piles he'd picked through so diligently.
"What are you doing still up?" Donnie yawned, then paused when he saw the mounds of candy surrounding Leo's feet. He blinked curiously at him, silently prompting an explanation with a tired gesture.
"I…" Leo's mouth flapped open and closed, completely at a loss for words. His eyes darted to his feet, as if the scattered words would give him the answer.
And then he saw it.
He bent down, not daring to breathe as he plucked the candy from the rainbow pile. It was real! It had been there all along. How had he missed it?
His throat was threatening to close as he rapidly straightened, clutching his prize desperately. He took a step forward and grabbed one of Donnie's hands, depositing the tiny candy in his roughened palm.
Donnie glanced down, squinting at it in the low light. The faded pink lettering was just legible on the dark purple colour of the candy.
Will U B mine?
Donnie looked up from the little heart to Leo's deadly serious eyes, his sleepy mind quickly putting the situation together. He began to smile as he squatted and pawed through the candy pile. He felt Leo's worried gaze boring into his skull as he plucked one and stood up. Triumphantly he handed it to Leo, who glared at it as if it were about to explode.
It was blue and simply read, Yes.
Relief flooded his body as he felt Donnie's arms wrapping around his shoulders, and he sagged against him gratefully.
"You're so adorable," Donnie chuckled as he nuzzled Leo's neck.
