The Interruption
The wolf, though large in size, was undernourished. It spent it's time either whining or growling as it paced its wood-planked confinement. Occasionally, the lonely night air would be pierced with a mournful howl.
Whenever it passed beneath the threadbare rays of moonlight which filtered through dusty curtains and a grimy, neglected window, the wolf would whimper and curl into itself. Its limbs ached so very much as its body shook with a power it could not release.
Companions. It was waiting for companions.
Two, whose paws could not handle the splinters of broken wood if the wolf were to succumb to its hurting instincts; another, who would have had no room for mobility if the wolf had split the grand piano.
Suddenly halting to stand at attention, the wolf pricked its ears toward the door. A pad pad of paws neared, and a slight snuffle was heard through the crack of the door. Claws scraped on the other side and the wolf responded with a high-pitched whine. The companion's scent receded then, replaced with something else.
Human.
Panting gasps quickened along with the beat of a frenzied heart as the wolf lunged, snarling and barking in furious excitement.
A panicked gasp sounded as the scent of fear seemed to coat the air. The door groaned and rattled as the wolf continued its desperate assault. Then it splintered, surrendering in defeat to reveal a pale, young, dark-haired wizard on the other side. The wolf's senses were assailed with the think scent of fear as blood rushed through its ears and its limbs ceased to ache. Deep gouges imbedded into the floor of the hall as the wolf charged, a terrifying streak of tan-gray and teeth. It lunged at the boy and tasted blood and marrow, biting through flesh and crunching through bone. An agonized, terror-filled scream pierced the air. The wolf bit down again and the human went silent.
A thunderous crash reverberated through the Shrieking Shack as a shout echoed to the hall. "Remus, NO!"
The wolf paid it no heed.
A booming roar rent the hall as a dark shape hurled itself at the wolf, knocking it off and away from the bleeding, unconscious human. Jaws clamped down upon the wolf's mane, a threatening growl muffled itself within the fur.
Anger.
Hatred.
Madness welled up within the wolf at this sign of betrayal as it began twisting against the black mutt above it. The scent of another human invaded the narrow hallway. A flash of red, and the wolf cried out as it was hurled through the splintered door and back into the moon-lit room. The second human's scent disappeared just as soon as it had come.
The last thing the wolf saw before the black dog's body obscured it's view was a stag vanishing down the stairs with the human's body draped over its back, jostling the ravaged limb. Pools of black red trailing after it, leaving behind the scent of iron, and the sound of vicious growls.
O
I've always wanted to do a "what if" story where Remus really did bite Snape. Incidentally, the only reason I actually went through with it is that I had to submit creative writing for my English class. xD
