Betsy and May ran into the bedroom where their father lay pretending to be asleep on his side of the bed. Their mother followed them carrying a tray with a mug of tea and a plate of buttered toast. The two young girls jumped on top of their father and began laughing excitedly.
'Happy Father's Day' they screeched down his ears. Robert wrapped an arm around each of his daughters, holding onto them tightly so they didn't fall off the bed.
'Morning girls' he croaked, glad to see his two offspring. It was moments like these that he lived for; precious time spent with the most important people in his life. Bob sat up in bed leaning against the headboard. Amy had placed the tray on her bedside table and had now joined her husband back in their marital bed, their two children snuggled up in between them.
The father began opening a card that his eldest daughter Betsy had shoved in his face. It was home-made, decorated with glitter and other fun things that she'd managed to get her hands on. On the front, in bubble writing, was written 'Happy Father's Day!' Inside, in the child's neatest handwritten was a message 'To Daddy, Happy Father's Day. You're the best! Love Betsy xxx' Robert pulled his daughter towards him and kissed her head
'Thanks Bets, I love it' was his response to the beautiful card.
'Mine now daddy!' insisted May pushing her card into her dad's hand
'Okay, okay' he ripped open the envelope that had been well stuck down and slid the card out. The card was just as decorative as the other one and even more creative. The writing on this one was a little messier but still readable. On the front was a rather large hand drawn sun in the corner and underneath two stick people holding hands; a father and his daughter. Inside the card was a similar message 'Dear Daddy. Happy Father's Day. Love May xxx'
'Do you like it Daddy?! Do you like it?!' Shouted May, jumping up and down on the bed
'Of course I do darling' Bob replied. He stretched out him arms and his youngest child jumped into them and together they clung onto each other. Amy lay next to her husband hugging their eldest daughter tightly. The children had endless supplies of energy, unlike their parents but the two adults didn't care. What meant the most to them was spending time with their family.
Later
'Daddy, Ben's here!' May excitedly shouted as she ran to the front door. Amy opened the door and greeted her beloved step-son with a smile
'Hi Amy!' he smiled as he walked up the drive to the front door and gave his step-mum a loving hug
'You alright love?' She replied, kissing the boys head
'Yeah' Ben grinned into the woman's eyes
'Hiya son' greeted Robert as he walked down the stairs and joined his family on the front door step. The fathers first born handed over a card and present to his dear dad and was then whisked away by his two younger sisters.
'Happy Father's Day Dad!' he shouted behind him. Their family was only ever complete when it was the five of them together.
