She was asleep. She always looked so peaceful when sleeping, when the cares of the world were out of her mind for the moment. It had been the same when she was human. Now, with so many more things to think about, it was only in sleep that he saw just how much she tried to cover up from him. From everyone.

He sat beside her head on the couch and gently lifted and twirled a lock of her hair between his fingers. It was a testament to how tired she was that with her pureblood senses she barely twitched at the movement. Kaname's mouth quirked into a small smile as he looked down at her. She was so confident. So brave. So ready and willing to run into situations without thinking. That last trait was going to get her in trouble, especially when he wasn't around to reign her in.

She put so much effort into becoming the perfect pureblood. He wondered if she realized how perfect she was already. With her genuine smile and innocent actions, Yuuki could do no wrong. At least when he was around to make sure she didn't take anything too far. She almost had with her actions after Ouri's death. Only Yuuki would think of knocking on the doors of vampires thousands of years older and wiser than she and demand that they allow her to kill them instead of forcing another to do it.

Kaname wondered what would have happened if anyone had taken her up on her offer. He didn't doubt her determination, but he had a feeling she would spend hours trying to talk the vampire out of death first. Thankfully he had the foresight to rectify any blunders she may have made while on her quest by keeping an eye on her in bat form. He didn't want to have to pick up the pieces if she actually did kill someone.

Yuuki mumbled in her sleep and rolled onto her side.

He wondered what she would think of what was to come. Would she still stand up for him? Would she trust him? . . . Would she turn away? Kaname released a breath of air and closed his tired eyes, tilting his head back to rest on the sofa. If she was safe, he could bear her rejection. Hopefully.

Kaname ran his fingers absentmindedly through her hair, mesmerized by the length, the curl, the silky texture. He never wanted to lose this. To lose her.

If she did reject him, he comforted himself, once the vampire world was safe for her he could return to his timeless slumber. Idly sleeping the years away wasn't an ideal situation, but without Yuuki by his side the world would cease to have meaning.

He desperately hoped it would not come to that.

Yuuki's eyes fluttered open and landed on him. "Oni-" she stopped to correct herself. "Kaname?"

Kaname smiled as she blinked away her sleepiness.

"Yuuki."

"What's wrong?" she asked, pushing herself up into a sitting position to look at him more clearly.

"Yuuki, there's somewhere I have to go."

Yuuki's brow furrowed. "You're leaving?" She clenched her fist around her dress. "Please don't go, Kaname."

"I'm sorry, Yuuki." Kaname's fingers soothed her hand into relaxation, knowing that leaving might just be the worst part. Yuuki had always had a fear of abandonment - one that only grew when her memories returned. "I'll be back soon." I hope.

He tried to ignore Yuuki's knowing eyes as he closed the door.

A/N: I'm dying to know what Kaname is really up to, but until then: more fanfiction about it!
