"Severus,... please."
Severus Snape glanced from Albus Dumbledore to Bellatrix Lestrange, Fenrir Greyback, Draco Malfoy, and Thorfinn Rowle. His black eyes then glanced downwards to catch the wide, green eyes of Harry Potter. He readied his wand and took a deep breath.
"Stupefy!" he cried, Stunning Greyback.
"Traitor!" screeched Bellatrix.
Dumbledore reacted instantly. He retrieved his wand and quickly Stunned Rowle, while Severus faced Bellatrix. He could feel the Unbreakable Vow's magic working. He was weakening quickly.
"Sectumsempra!"
Bellatrix went down in spurts of blood as Harry came running up.
"Professor!" he cried in horror as Snape collapsed.
Dumbledore hurried over and knelt beside the fading potions master.
"Oh, Severus."
Severus pulled out a small potion phial, which held a glowing, silvery potion.
"This will counter... the potion that guarded... the locket."
"Severus, there's still time."
The Slytherin shook his head weakly.
"No, Albus. You are needed... more than I am. I have a way to... save you."
"Dying yourself will not save me from the curse, Severus."
He managed a smirk.
"This way it... will."
He reached out and took Dumbledore's burned hand in both of his.
"You were... like my father,... Albus."
Tears now glistened in Dumbledore's blue eyes, and Harry, surprisingly, felt his own eyes starting to burn from unshed tears.
"And you are like my son, Severus."
"Take... this... final... gift."
Severus' hands began to glow a soft, warm, gold, encasing their clasped hands. Dumbledore gasped, and the potions master went limp, his black eyes dull and lifeless. Albus raised his right hand, which was fully restored. Severus had used the last of his magic and very lifeforce to save Dumbledore.
The Headmaster began to cry softly for the man he had loved as a son, a son who had given his life to save his father. Harry bowed his head and headed downstairs, only to be nearly bowled over by Remus Lupin, who had a frantic look in his eyes as he raced up the stairs. Moments later students, staff, and Order members froze at the sorrowful, howl-like wail that sounded from the tower, and Harry knew he had found Severus, who had, amazingly, become like a brother to the werewolf.
Harry reached his friends. All eyes were on the stairs as Remus came down. Dumbledore followed, Severus' body in his arms.
"Oh no," whispered Molly Weasley.
When Severus was buried his headstone was simple yet it seemed to suit him. It read;
Severus Snape, 1960-1997
Honored Sacrifice
Always.
He would be remembered as a hero of the war, as thanks to his sacrifice, Dumbledore himself destroyed Voldemort not three months later.
