Penumbra

Incentive: Requested by iHeartLead.

Characters And/Or Pairings: Masquerade/Alice. Could also be just Alice and Masquerade.

Disclaimer: I does not own Bakugan. The world is okay.

A/N: iHeartLead asked me if I could write a Masquerade/Alice fic. I blinked, contemplated, skipped through a field of careful meditation, and said, "Hell, I'm sure I could fit a quick oneshot into the busy schedule that is my glamorous life~!"

That's right. My life is friggin' glamorous. *nods* I'm like…that one rich person with the really glamorous life. Besides Fergie.

Also; be jealous of the title I came across by total accident mortals. Be way jealous.

They flitted across her eyes and escaped into the spaces beyond her fingertips.

They were tiring, despairing, terrifying. Alice was supposed to live in the light; she had nothing to hide and nothing to fear. She always tried to be a good girl, a nice girl, so that her life remained vacant of accusation and misdeeds. She was a child of the Earth and of the Sun –

– a Sun that was extinguished and an Earth that was polluted as the shadows grabbed her wrists, pinched her delicate skin, dragged her into his perfectly hidden Hell.

She couldn't escape them. She couldn't catch them to cast them away. The shadows always lurked, encasing her -

…encasing him.

Her vision blurred each time she tried to face him – the shadows were never his enemies, they were his indestructible aegis – with autonomous declarations that withered away on her lips.

I'm not you. I don't want you. I don't need you.

The mask would just smirk, tease, linger. It sapped away at her will and her hope for redemption, for a safe return to the light. She was condemned for the things she never did and couldn't undo.

Then he was gone.

She was left with nothing but fly-away dust, a heavy heart, and these shadows (lonely, spiteful, reminiscing shadows of him), and she was further entrapped her. They wouldn't bend towards her command like he had, they weren't of her soul or of her world like they were his, and she couldn't stop them from turning her world, which he had left her to survive through alone, into a painful pretense.

Alice knew she wasn't him.

Alice wasn't sure if she wanted him.

But she could think that she needed him—if only to help her manage these ghosts and create her own protection from the world that now hurt so much.

It hurt to be alone when both Sun and Shade blinded.

A/N: …Yayz for shortness and suckiness? :D Sowwy. I've gotten bad at dragging out oneshots.

Anywho…any constructive criticism? Flames? Something other than liez? :3 Gimme advice on the last line; I've had two of my friends tell me it was a bit awkward, soooo~...

Also; go to my profile mortals. Important announcement. Deathly important. The fate of my free time depends on you going to it. *nods*
