Title: Worthless

Rating: PG-13

Disclaimer: I don't own any of these characters.

AN: Written for Lost Fic Challenge #24, Shannon's POV during The Greater Good. Honestly, I wrote this in 5 minutes, it's not my best work, but I couldn't stand working on Analecta anymore.

Where there is smoke, there is fire, wasn't that what the old adage said? She was so tired, her eyes heavy and red rimmed with tears, that she was losing her grasp on the English language. Not that English had ever been her strong suit anyway, that was Boone's forte.

Boone. The cause of her pain, her insanity. It was only hours ago that she'd found him, limp and his skin pale and so porcelain. So fragile, so unlike him. He'd been so alive, vibrant, spirited, and now he was gone. All because of Locke, at least that's what Jack said, she hadn't been here, she'd been with Sayid. Sayid, he wouldn't help her, not that it mattered now, she was going to prove Boone wrong.

She felt a chill run up her spine and it took her a second to realize that it was rain hitting her back, trying to calm her rage. But she couldn't think peaceful thoughts, not when she was clawing through the case, searching desperately for a weapon. She'd never fired a gun, but it didn't matter, she'd seen enough movies to figure it out. Release the clip, pull the trigger, aim for the heart.

It wouldn't be the first heart she'd destroyed. Maybe if she hadn't used Boone to get back at Sabrina, maybe if she hadn't started to believe that she was worthless like Boone had, he wouldn't be here, she wouldn't be here, and they'd be alive. She felt the burn of tears in her eyes and forced them back. Tears wouldn't bring Boone back, wouldn't make Locke pay for what he'd done.

Jack had to be right, he'd never lied about anything. Locke, he was the murderer, there was enough suspicion and she owed Boone this much. Clutching the cool metal close to her chest she stalked further into the jungle, like a huntress circling her prey. She knew what she had to do, suspicion was enough here, there was no jury, only his word against Jack's, and she trusted the doctor, he was logical.

And when it came down to it, she mused that where there was smoke, there was fire, and the jungle was burning up tonight.
