Chapter One: An Agreement
"Syaoran!" Crystal tears like small diamond chips trailed down from misty green eyes. "Wake up, Syaoran!"
He did not stir. The boy was extraordinarily pale within the magical bubble cage. The barrier which trapped him inside was sucking out all his energy, leaving only a lifeless body behind. The resonant amber eyes that held so much resolve were lost in the world of dreams.
"Wake up!" She cried again. Her clenched hands slammed against the invisible barrier that separated him from her. He was so close to her, yet he was so far away.
The infinite sky outside the tower was mocking her. Rather than the typical dramatic scene in movies where the sky would weep for the main character's sadness, the heavens above were shining a bright, midnight shade of blue. The stars were glistening in the night sky and a full moon's radiated at them.
Her auburn hair was moist; damped by her own tears. Sakura knew that the blame on Syaoran's condition wasn't on anyone but herself. Everything was her fault. Because Syaoran was strong, it led him to this state. Because Syaoran was strong, he took the immense burden to protect everyone else around him; especially her. Even though she was named mistress of the Clow cards—even if the cards chose her to be their mistress, she didn't deserve the role. She couldn't do anything except wave her star wand around and turned the cards into Sakura cards.
What made it even worse was the fact that everyone always supported her – Kero, Yue, Eriol, Tomoyo, and especially Syaoran. Even though he showed up at Tomeda with the mission to capture all the Clow cards, he ended up supporting her.
It had always been Syaoran who saved her, who fought in her place. Syaoran was always there to protect her.
She had always been aware of the fact that he liked her. She wasn't naïve as her friends believed, but she chose to ignore it. Back then, she didn't want to face it. She was childish and afraid of what love would bring her. Because of that, she played ignorant, pretending and forcing herself to not know. Unlike him, she ran away from her feelings, even when she slowly developed feelings for him. And now, karma decided to get back at her, making sure that she would never be able to tell him how she felt.
"Syaoran…" she sobbed. "Wake up!"
Everything around her was insignificant. It was only him that mattered. The void card had shown up and stole his emotions away. No… the void card did not steal it away. She did. In order to protect her, he voluntarily stepped forward and sacrificed himself for her.
She remembered his words clearly when he stepped forward to protect her. "It's okay if I forget about you, Sakura. Even if I lose this feeling, I'll just fall for you all over again." Those words made her heart skipped a beat.
"Syaoran…"
"Foolish little girl. He can't hear you. He is weak and under my spell. He will slowly get weaker and weaker in my barrier. Then, he will fall asleep, never to wake up. And even if he does, he will never remember you." The Void card mocked her with its sweet melodious voice. The voice card resembled a child; one with the face of a porcelain doll— beautiful and ethereal.
In the beginning, she only wanted to go after the emotions of the young mistress of the Clow cards. But then the feelings that the young boy held for the mistress intrigued her. The boy thoughtlessly stepped forward and sacrificed his own life for hers. She found it imprudent. Especially because she found love to be an illusive feeling.
An ironic emotion.
The saying: Love will conquer everything, was a false statement. She had seen the true nature of human beings. Humans who vowed to love each other for eternity. But these vows all broke and fell apart throughout the cycle of time. It was only marriage that bound them together and helped them to fight their battle against time. Nothing lasted forever. Where there was happiness, there was also sadness. It was an endless and meaningless cycle.
"It's okay if I forget about you. Even if I lose this feeling, I'll just fall for you all over again." When the boy said that to the girl, she was intrigued. The boy's amber eyes held such blaze and confidence. It made her curious - Curious at how far their love for each other could go. She wondered about the actions mistress of the Clow Cards would carry out. She wondered if Sakura would save him, or would she simply be like any other human being and run away, saving only herself.
'If it's like that, then she doesn't deserve to be my mistress. She doesn't deserve to rule over the Clow cards… over my friends.' The young goddess resolved.
But no, Sakura did not run away.
"Let him out! If you trapped him there for all eternity, he will die!" She cried and more crystal tears like chipped diamonds fell down onto her pale face.
"He won't die." The void's face remained emotionless. "He's just under my spell."
"Let him out… please!"
"That won't do. I want you to suffer like I did; to be alone for all eternity. And same with him. He is trapped in another world, to remain there for all eternity in darkness."
"Then… trapped me too."
The firm resolved left Sakura's lips and the Void quirked her eyebrow.
"It's a scary place there, girl. It's darkness and endless. You guys might not even be able to meet each other. And if I don't free you, you will stay there for the rest of your lives."
"I don't mind. Because I will meet Syaoran there! I just want to be by his side! That is all that matters."
Her mouth twitched into a smirk. "I admire your persistence, but I won't trap you. However, I want to test your love for each other. I want to see how far your love for each other can go. "
Sakura's eyes widened.
"You guys will live out new lives, without memories of each other."
"And ultimately, you will once more meet each other. But this time, will you fall in love with each other again? Or will your love for each other last only up until here? If you want to know if your feelings for each other are true enough, your heart will tell you."
Her eyes bored right into Sakura's hesitant green orbs.
"I… I believe in my love for Syaoran! So please, let him go."
"Very well. You will be born in the same dimension, the same time, and the same world. You will find each other. This dimension will be recreated, as if it never existed in the first place."
Sakura smiled and look at Syaoran, "I love you, Syaoran." With that, she closed her eyes and whispered, "Thank you."
Their lives were branched away into different paths, but Sakura knew they would meet again. 'Next time, Syaoran, I won't let my chance fleet away."
A white light exploded.
The void card looked at the empty space and then she whispered, "Show me a miracle, young mistress."
