Cursing brought blue eyes snapping up. Rage poured into Vin. He found renewed strength as he ran across the sands and ripped the whip out of the stranger's hand. "LEAVE HIM ALONE!"

"What's it to ya? He ain't worth the peso I spent on him." The stranger, who felt it his responsibility to beat his stallion for his injury, spat on the ground beside the trembling horse.

Vin backhanded him, knocking him down. "LEAVE HIM!" The whip's crack silenced his protests. He fled.

Vin fell on his knees beside the horse. Together they would make it to a better day.
