One-Shot: Finnick and Johanna Kiss
Widowed father Finnick Odair stepped off the train from District 4 into District 7. In his one hand, he clutched his son, Finn - the only reminder of Annie Cresta, his wife and lover who died giving birth to him. The pair strode up to the Victors' Village, where only one person lived.
Johanna Mason, Victor of the 71st Hunger Games, had returned to her homeland after the war. She worked the trees and fields to glean lumber during harvest time, and that plus her Victor winnings meant she made pretty good money. Finnick knocked at the door of his old friend and ally and colleague.
Auntie Johanna was more than happy to see her surrogate nephew, Finn. Even though Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark had been designated as the boy's godparents, the moniker for Johanna had stuck.
"We've come here to stay, Jo," Finnick explained. "Refugees. District 4 isn't enough anymore. Can we stay with you for a time until we find a place?"
Johanna accepted at once and set Finn up in one of her spare bedrooms. That night, she brought Finnick coffee on the couch. He smiled at her.
"I came here for another reason, Johanna." he smiled. "I love you. You're as close to me as I even was with Annie. And Finn needs a mother. We know each other, we understand each other. So... will you marry me?"
Johanna thought for a moment, before finally kissing Finnick hungrily and on the lips. That was a Yes. "Yes, Finnick, I will."
That very night, the two Victors went out and chopped a sapling down and laid it flat. Both leapt over it, before using the logs to make a bonfire and then leaping over that. Then, Finnick got dunked by Johanna in a nearby lake, and he carried her, laughing, across it. There was no flat-bottomed boat, but both marriage ceremonies in both districts were completed. Only now did Finnick and Johanna feel married.
Marriage between Victors of the Hunger Games was rare, due to a rule known as the Victors' Code. Marriage between two Victors was even rarer, and for two belonging to different districts... such a martial union had never knowingly happened. Ever.
But, as she kissed Finnick, Johanna promised to be faithful to her new husband. As well as to his son, her stepson.
