Numpty
Preface
Numpty is a Scottish word that generally means idiot or fool, used as in insult towards someone or something stupid or foolish. Example: A dog runs into a tree and the owner says 'What a Numpty'
In their first week of dating, Percy found he was beginning to find out things about Oliver he'd never known when they'd just been friends. They'd been close, but he was noticing more now that there was a romantic attachment between the pair of them. One thing he noticed was that Oliver was naturally very shy and it almost seemed that he had an inferiority complex, but he overcame it by putting on a bravado and played the quidditch captain with such ferocity that sometimes it seemed almost as if he were some sort of Militant General commanding troops.
Another thing he noticed was that Oliver was clumsy. During matches he'd always seemed to have a grace in his movements, almost as if the broomstick he rode was in fact part of him, an extension of sorts. But now… he realised that Oliver was useless on his feet sometimes. Monday saw him stumbling, Tuesday he walked into Marcus Flint, barely managing to make it look like he'd done it on purpose to anger the rival captain. Wednesday brought a chuckle to the Gryffindor table when he sat down and missed the wooden bench, barely managing to grab onto Percy and the poor second year on the other side of him who could barely keep the captain's weight from the floor. Thursday he stumbled again, and on Friday the poor captain was embarrassed to find himself ripping his quidditch briefs.
Friday had given Percy a good long chuckle that still sprang up in his mind from time to time months later, luckily for Oliver he'd been around and was able to repair the trousers before the rest of the team found out what had happened. How Oliver had even managed to tear his trousers while he was on the broom, Percy just didn't know.
He did however know that several months later it was his turn to show an unusual spout of clumsiness which in turn made Oliver laugh. For Percy it was mortifying, he didn't do stupid things like walk into doors, tables, drop large muggle encyclopaedias on his feet or even walk into locker doors in the Gryffindor changing rooms.. Till now that was.
Seven months into their relationship and he was just as bad as Oliver had been in the first week. Oliver just laughed, telling Percy he looked cute when he was cursing at the book shouting "Oh snap dragons! I should sock you one". But to Oliver that didn't really matter because all the headaches and pouts could be cured with a simple kiss and muttering of "My Numpty", because that's what Percy was…
Oliver's Numpty
Author's Notes:
It's short and it's not great but I'm trying to once again get back into writing. My boyfriend uses the word numpty alot as it's "his word" even though it's actually scottish and he's welsh but we kind of use it as a petname for each other. Thought I'd try and relate Oliver to him in the whole sense of clumsiness and using Numpty ect
