If he was just Francis and she was just Mary, maybe things would be different.
Maybe she'd see his face every morning instead of the smooth silk and velvet of her pillows. Maybe he wouldn't have to worry about kingdoms, thrones or governing, but only her, just her.
If she was just Mary and he was just Francis, things would be different. They would be the only ones in the relationship, not shoved around to make space for the majority of the court. Their business would be their business.
If she was just Mary and he was just Francis, there wouldn't be anyone else contending for their hearts, pulling and tugging until there was a channel in between them,
If he was just Francis and she was just Mary, their love wouldn't be a little poisoned, like the way Catherine poisoned Count Vincent's men. Maybe their life wouldn't be as lavish, either, but if she was just Mary and he was just Francis, they would be okay with that.
