Just Before

(2 point of views)

Jesenia:

I stare at the clock, two minutes left,

In my uniform I begin to sweat.

One mistake that is all it takes

But hey I have done this several times before

It is no big deal; stop fooling around it is time to soar.

I turn around and begin to call out,

Instructions to line up.

But wait, there is the band walking down,

Why can't they do that whenever I am around?

Nick:

Walking down the bleachers to get set up,

I look at my fellow Drum Major's face and laughed.

Quickly and quietly I walked onto the track,

And headed to my spot at the head of the pack.

Jesenia joins me; I smile at her she smiles back,

The rest of the band lines up ready to go,

It is time to perform our halftime show.

Silently we walked, with some laughs in-between,

We get to our spots and go "down to the ready."

Jesenia:

I looked at Nick, he gave me a nod.

I raised my arm, in my hand shown a whistle.

I blew the command; long, short, long, short, short, and long.

We snapped to attention screams of "HUT" piercing the air.

I blew another command and we start to march on to the field for the show.

Our sections break to set up in formations,

But Nick and I keep marching to get to our stations.

We look at each other and give a nod,

We both silently count to three and….

Nick:

Up go our sticks (do not know what they are called) into the air,

Spinning in a circle they come down.

We catch them and thrust them into the ground.

On bended knee we sink down and salute, I grab my saxophone and get to my spot.

Jesenia jumps onto the platform and waits.

Jesenia:

I raise my hands and begin to conduct

The show is going great, thanks to talent and luck.

I flash through the first song and start the next,

Now comes the part the sounds the best.

Nick:

I start my solo, confident but not cocky.

My hands move slowly, the music comes out.

Then the end of solo comes and everyone joins back in,

Woodwinds, brass, trumpets, and drums.

The song ends, now it is my turn to conduct.

I raise my hands, and off we go

"Disney's Magical Marches" is heard throughout the night,

We are finally in step; I roll my eyes it is about time we got that right.

The song is finished, I sigh in relief,

I step off the podium and start to march out.

Both:

The show went great, it was not a bore.

So why were we nervous in the beginning?

Something could have gone wrong, we guess.

But nervous is something we are just before….
