Zeke had never been skating. He'd never been interested. Jimmy Jr., however loved going to the roller rink. Zeke had gotten in the habit of going along, just to keep Jimmy company. As the boys hit puberty though, Zeke's motives started to change. He watched Jimmy slide across the smooth floor, dancing and twirling and expressing himself through motion. He found it mesmerizing. Zeke couldn't tell his best friend how he'd been feeling. He was afraid of changing tber dynamic or ruining their relationship entirely. But he wished he could express himself without saying it aloud. He'd been tempted to kiss his J-Ju, but he was terrified of rejection and the potential backlash and damage to his reputation. So he just sat and watched Jimmy, and his heart would stop every time they would make eye contact, especially while he was in the rink.
One day, while on the way to the rink Jimmy asked out of the blue, "Why don't you ever skate?" Zeke shrugged, "I'm not very good at it." "I'll help you learn!" Jimmy volunteered quickly. Zeke thought for a second about how to respond "It's not really my thing J-Ju." "Come on Zeke, It'll be FUN!" Jimmy gave Zeke a smile that melted his heart and he agreed.
The first thing Zeke learned: He wasn't made for skating. The second thing: the floor of a skating rink is hard and cold. "Come on Zeke, It's just like walking, but you slide instead," Jimmy instructed as he helped Zeke up. It wasn't the first time, but Zeke was slowly improving. As the day wore on, Zeke got the hang of skating, mostly. Later on in the evening, it became time for couples skate. Jimmy was preparing to exit the floor, but Zeke caught his hand. "We don't have to go." Zeke tried hard not to blush "I mean we can pretend to be a couple, since I know you like to skate so much." He blurted out, unable to keep eye contact. "But we'd have to like, hold hands." Jimmy responded, sounding a bit unsure. "I'm cool with it if you are," Zeke retorted. Jimmy shrugged and they joined hands and skated together to the slow song. Zeke's heart was racing. He was holding Jimmy's hand, skating together, to a romantic song. He glanced at Jimmy and was entranced, he was just so... graceful. Zeke, unfortunately, was not and after a few seconds he unceremoniously tripped over his own skates, dragging Jimmy Jr. down on top of them. "Zeke! What the-" Jimmy protested, before he realized their position. He was on top of Zeke, a few inches away from is friend's face. Zeke was blushing furiously. He couldn't stop staring at Jimmy's slightly flush and sweaty face. He was panicking, he couldn't think and he didn't want to move, so he did the only thing he could think of. He shut his eyes and closed the distance between them. It wasn't a deep romantic kiss, just a chaste meeting of lips; a declaration of admiration. When he opened his eyes, Jimmy Jr's face was more flushed than it had been and he looked stunned and confused. "I like you, J Ju." Zeke shyly admitted. "I like you too, but um can we get up now?" They never really discussed it any further, but from that point on, Jimmy and Zeke always skated together, and that was always something special they shared.
