there's something in between you and i

"You realize this is making me a cheater, right?"

Cheat on me, cheat with me, he thinks.

Full circle.

Fireworks.

Stars.

Gold stars.

Rachel.

Oh, Rachel. And he feels bad again, sad again, mistreated... Again.

He's Noah Puckerman, just without the stupid mohawk and criminal record. He's doing the hurting this time, he's breaking someone's heart.

Quinn pulls away and smiles; Finn just feels sick.

Finn's like forgetting.

When Quinn kisses him, she zooms back to the beginning. When his hands were still tentative, when no one else had ever touched her, when she was still good. Finn is like a time machine that transports her back to when everything was easy.

She likes that, she likes pretending.

It's not that he wants to stop, because he doesn't.

He wants to kiss Quinn in the audotorium with the lights down low, he wants to lay her down behind the piano. He wants her to whisper his name against his lips while his hands slip beneath her uniform, slowly, softly.

He just wishes it weren't like this, wishes they weren't like this.

They weren't supposed to be secrets, or hidden things, or lies. Finn doesn't do deception, he isn't Puck, he's not, and he hates that they've turned into something bad.

And when he looks at Sam, he sees himself a year ago, and that hurts and its ironic and he feels horrible.

Quinn knows why she was attracted to Sam.

She knows, and when he walks away, she cries and she's hurt but not really, not as much as she was when it was Finn leaving. She felt like the world was crumbling beneath her feet, like the universe was spinning off its axis and she'd never be able to breathe again.

Finn pulled himself away from her, and, slowly but surely, cut all his ties. They had a joint future, a shared life, they had plans, and she mourned it all for months. With Sam, it's a clean break. One minute they're together, the next, they're not. And that's it. Over and done with.

(She was attracted to him because he's the Old Finn, easy smile and warm heart. Problem is, the New Finn still has a hold on her. Obviously.)

He wants to say:

"It's always been you."

Even when he had Rachel, he still wanted her, missed her. She's just something that he's always going to need.

But he's not sure how she'd take that.

So he buys her 3 roses because it's her favorite number and kisses her on the cheek at her locker. It feels right, like something he would've done back then.

When she dreams that night, she sees rose petals, drizzling rain, and his eyes staring straight through her. It feels right.

"It's always been you."

He says it before he can stop himself, the words tumbling out of his mouth. Quinn freezes and then... she smiles at him and he loves seeing it. She grips his hand tight and kisses him, and its like a continuation. Like everything between then and now was a pause.
