Mr. Gerten was taking the morning's attendence.
"Micheal Luwen?"
"Yeah" A kid in the back row raised his hand.
"Janine Martin?"
"Present, Mr. Gerten." A girl with a sugary voice responded.
"Marebelle Maza?" There was silence "Marebelle Maza? Has anyone seen her?" No one said a word, although a couple kids exchanged looks that said 'of course she's not here'. "Well, she must be absent. Hmm."
Just then someone came racing into the room. "I'm here." Several kids laughed.
"Yes, but you are late...again." Mr. Gerten calmly replied.
"So what? Would you rather I wasn't here? Huh? 'Cause I can leave."
"Please take your seat and stop by to see me after homeroom."
"Whatever." She shuffled to her seat behind Janine who was looking smug and commented as Marebelle passed her. "Well, atleast some of us actually believe in coming to school."
Marebelle stopped and said "Bite me. Not everyone lives in a fairy tale." before taking her seat and fuming.
"That's enough." said Mr. Gerten and continued on with attendence.
Marebelle just spent the rest of homeroom fuming while Janine contiued to have a smug look upon her face. She never thought the bell would ring, but finally it did. She then went up to Mr. Gerten's desk.
"Yeah?"
"Ms. Maza, you have been tardy to homeroom every day this week and almost every day last week. I have spoken with your other teachers and this does not appear to be isolated. They all report tardiness and a disrepectful attitude towards others. Do you have anything you wish to say?"
"No. Listen, can I go now?"
"Not yet. I hope you realise that you are going to be assigned a detention for your tardiness in here and you face grade reduction in your other classes."
"Who gives?"
"Is there something wrong at home that's causing this?" He asked as he handed her the detention slip.
"You know what? This is none of your damn business. So just leave me alone." Marebelle stormed off and hoped she wouldn't be late for biology. She was though and she was counted tardy. The rest of the day wasn't much better. She was relieved when the bell for the day's end rang and ran to her locker. She quickly put stuff in it and ran off to find Chris. Chris could tell that Marebelle was in a sour mood.
"Hey, how was school?"
"It sucked major ass like always."
"What happened?"
"I got detention, I could have my grades lowered when they already suck, I guess I'm not respectful enough, and oh yeah I'm still the resident freak of the damn school. Unless you can think of anything that I left out."
"I can't, actually. But isn't there someone you can talk to? Like a teacher or counselor or something?"
"Hmm...let's just think about that one. Uh...no, not unless I want my sorry ass to be locked up in a fucking governtment lab."
"Sorry."
"It's not your fault that's the way it is, but I thought you had brains enough to know that's not an option." By now they were outside the Maza apartment.
"Ok, ok. Listen though I'm your friend and I want to help. I wish things were better for you."
"Yeah. I gotta go inside. Later."
"Alright, bye." Chris called as he towards his family's apartment. Marebelle turned the door knob and went inside.
