The Single Cry
It was late at night on a Friday evening; the sun had set many hours ago. The chill of the frigid cold December air was making it a sure thing for some flurries soon. It felt exceedingly good to be alone and away from my family, relaxation is hard to come by. I was running through the thick green forest looking for my next kill. I am a hunter and my prey is the unsuspecting deer. That was how I had to survive now. There of course was another way to sustain life for myself but do I really want to stoop that low. I live this life style just to keep a small portion of my humanity. I am a vampire.
I could smell the small doe near the edge of the highway. The venom began to pool inside my mouth. I lurked up behind the innocent deer, I hunched into a crouch just about ready to strike. But at that moment I heard a loud crash that would have been heard by human ears. Then just a single baby's cry rang through my ears. I was then lost from my concentration. I moved slightly and the doe fled at once. My dinner was gone.
I ran through the forest trying to track the sound that had lost me my dinner. It had come from a car that had toppled over, but from what I had no clue. I could smell to passengers dead in the front seats of the car, they had no heart beat. Then I caught the smell of that was the most mouth watering scent I have ever inhaled. It came from the baby in the back seat. I was sure it was a little baby boy not even 6 months old. He was simply and utterly exquisite. Beautiful couldn't even describe him. I gently picked up the baby and held him in my arms. The scent didn't bother me at all. I wouldn't be able to hurt a hair on his precious head.
As my eyes took in the sight of him, I realized I had never seen anything as gorgeous as him. He had a copper honey colored hair that went all different ways. His tiny little pink lips were adorable, but what held my attention longest were his eyes. The most brilliant shade of emerald green, they shone like a beacon through the dark night.
I carried him in my arms, this little miracle; to the home I shared my coven/family. I didn't care at the moment for their approval of bringing him home. I felt possessive over this little being lying peacefully in my arms. I was going to protect him no matter what. Nothing would hurt him ever.
When I made it home I began to wrap him in the throw blankets Esme kept on the couch for decoration, as I did so I noticed that his little jacket had his name embroidered on it. It said Edward Anthony Masen.
