Crystal Heart
Warning: Character Death
Sasuke was silent, facing away from the village, looking at the rising moon. Sakura was behind him, holding her hands to her chest, crying.
"Don't leave me! If you leave I'll scream and I'll-! Sasuke-kun-!" Suddenly Sasuke was behind her.
"Thank you Sakura," Sasuke whispered, lifting his hand to her neck.
Sakura looked down, her hair hiding her expression. "Can I give you... one last thing?" she whispered, softly.
Sasuke frowned and momentarily paused, curious to see what she'd do.
Sakura smiled the smile of a ghost. "We can grow this only once in our lives. As our love crystallizes and grows, so, too, do our hearts. They are a manifestation of our love," she said.
Sasuke's frown deepened. "Sakura, what are you-?"
Sasuke gasped as Sakura plunged her hand into her chest. "Sakura-!"
Sakura wretched her hand from her chest as she fell back; Sasuke instantly caught her.
"Sakura! Sakura! What did you do?! Don't die! You can't!" he shouted in hysterics.
Sakura smiled reassuringly. "Shh...Sasuke..." she whispered, blood trailing down the corner of her lip. "Take it. Leave. Disappear and hide forever if you want, no one will find you with this."
Sakura opened her hand and Sasuke saw a gemstone in it. The stone was the size of a heart and could easily fit in the palm of his hand. It was red, brighter than the blood in Sakura's hand, and was filled with passion and love, undying affection. Sasuke couldn't take his tear filled eyes away from it until Sakura broke his trance.
"Don't hesitate. Take it and go. This will keep you happy, safe and warm; it will make sure you are always well... No one can take it from you and it will always protect you in my stead. This is me... saying I love you... like... never... before..."
In that moment, Sakura Haruno left the world of the living and went to the world of the afterlife. Sasuke sobbed loudly, kissing her face and lips, trying to remember the warmth of her skin as it rapidly faded, trying to remember her smile. When they came for him the next day, no one could find him, but he never made it to the snake.
End.
I got this idea from a short-story in the back of a manga I read once and I thought it was the most romantic thing, and the most devastating thing.
The heart crystal is the embodiment of happiness, but if they truly love the one they give it to… doesn't it only leave sadness?
