Hey all,

Just watched last night's episode. I was gutted to know that my guess was right about Ethan having the gene. I had such high hopes when they both said that they were all clear.

Anyway, just a little one shot on what happened after Ethan walked away at the end of the episode.

Ethan sat in the back of the ambulance, looking at the beach. Thinking about everything: the story he told Emilie as she quietly passed away and the letter that contained his future.

Ethan didn't hide his emotions. Tears were streaming down his face. He felt bad for lying to Emilie about not having the gene but he didn't want her to be sad in her last moments.

Cal pushed their deceased mother in a wheelchair back to the ambulance where he lifted her back into the ambulances trolley. As Cal strapped Emilie on to the trolley, he looked down at Ethan, who hasn't moved from the spot so he went to join him.

"What is it Ethan? What are you thinking about?" Cal asked as he watched Ethan's saddened face. Ethan exhaled a trembling breath. He felt like he was holding his breath for a long time.

"Our mum is dead." Ethan lied as he tried to hide his real thoughts.

"That's not it, Ethan. Is it?" Cal asked, looking at the side of Ethan's face as he still watched the beach. Ethan felt his lip quiver.

"I've got the gene, Cal." Ethan started to sob. Cal pulled him into a hug. "I've got the gene!" Ethan wailed. Cal rested his chin on Ethan's head as he restrained Ethan comfortingly whilst he fidgeted. Ethan grabbed Cal's arm as he continued to cry excessively.

"It's okay." Cal tried to soothe his little brother. "It's okay, Ethan. I got you." Cal sniffled as tears ran down his face. Ethan continued to cry. All Cal could do was hold him and comfort him.

A while later, after Ethan had calmed down. Cal returned to the ambulance with two cups of coffee.

"Thank you." Ethan spoke softly as he accepted the polystyrene cup.

"How you feeling?" Cal asked as he sat next to Ethan.

"Numb." Ethan answered honestly. "Tired." Ethan kept giving answers. "Scared." Ethan looked at Cal.

"I know you are." Cal looked at Ethan's red, tired eyes.

"I'm going to be like Mum, unable to do anything." Ethan looked down at his cup. "Do you know how old she was when she...?" Ethan asked but couldn't finish his question.

"All I know is that she started getting depressed shortly before we were taken away. But everyone is different Ethan. If and I mean IF you develop it, you may not get it till you're 60 or something." Cal tried to reassure Ethan.

"How can you possibly know that, Cal?" Ethan asked, he felt like Cal didn't understand the pain he was feeling. Of course he wouldn't. His test was clear.

"I don't, Ethan. But all I know is that you are fine right now and you should enjoy life and call Kate." Cal smiled and chuckled a little. Ethan couldn't help but smile too.

"Where do we go from here, Cal?" Ethan asked as he turned his head back to the beach.

"Well first, we are going to get Mum somewhere warm and safe, then we take the ambulance back to the station and then we get a throttling from the ED." Cal answered.

"Mrs Beauchamp is going to kill us." Ethan frowned but Cal smiled.

"Not if Iain does first." Cal responded. Cal and Ethan looked at each other and then chuckled.

They both looked back at Emilie. She looked peaceful. "We better get back." Cal stated before downing his coffee and getting up to shut one of the ambulance doors. Cal looked down at Ethan who was still looking thoughtful.

"It's going to be okay, Ethan. Whatever happens, we will sort it." Cal assured his troubled sibling. Ethan looked up at Cal and nodded before climbing into the back of the ambulance.

Cal shut both of the back doors and walked round to the front where he jumped into the drivers seat. He took one last look at Ethan who was holding Emilie's hand before turning back around and driving back to Holby City Hospital.
