Leaving

He was leaving.

She knew it as she awkwardly sat next to him on the bus.

She knew as he said he couldn't take her to prom.

She knew it as her eyes fell over the bag jammed into the crevice between the seat and the wall. His bag. He was leaving.

He glanced up at her for a split second before his eyes traveled to where hers were pointed. Caught in the act.

She wriggled awkwardly in her seat, and his eyes traveled up to her face. As he caught her staring at him, he looked down in his lap again.

"I'm not going to tell you stay. If you want to run away from whatever you're running from, then run. I know as well as anyone that I can't stop you."

He didn't have to look at her eyes again to know that tears were pooling in them. He didn't have to look at her face to know that they were running down her cheeks. He didn't have to look at her hands to know they were hastily trying to swipe away the salty drops.

He didn't have to look anywhere, so he didn't.

Instead her words ran through his mind. Was he really leaving again? Running from his problems? All his life he'd ran. Away from Liz, away from problems, away from Stars Hollow, and now, again, away from her.

Did he want to run again?

No. But he had to. There was no other choice.

He was grateful that she hadn't asked him to stay. If she had, there was no way he'd be able to leave right now.

They stayed silent.

And then, "This is my stop. Um, I guess I'll see you around..."

And then he was alone, her words still racing through his brain, a record that wouldn't stop.

The bus came to a halt again. Only a block away, still in Hartford. Quickly, quietly, he got off.

He wouldn't run this time.
