A Lion Saving A Lamb(?)

― Broken Hearts ―

(Without Saying Goodbye)

Normal PoV

"How could you, Jake! You promised me! I thought we were friends!" A petite brunette yelled out at the dark skinned giant in front of her. Her hair sticking to her face due to the rain currently falling, and that was keeping hidden her tears for the other.

She had known since the moment she saw him today that he was different, that he changed.

"Exactly Bella, we were friends. I don't want to be your friend anymore. Hell, I never wanted to be your friend! The only reason I stuck with you was because your dad begged mine for me to help you!" A knot formed in the pit of the brunette's stomach when she heard his confession. So that was it? That was the reason he spent his evenings with her? Not because he actually liked Bella? "I felt sorry for you! You are the most selfish person I've ever met!" It felt like someone was tearing out her heart right out of her chest. I was horrible.

"I don't believe you." Her voice barely a whisper, but nonetheless, he was able to hear her.

"I don't fucking care if you do or not, but I don't want to see you ever again! You are a whore! As soon as your little boyfriend left you came running to me!" The dark skinned teen spat at her with so much venom in his voice she flinched at the sound. Bella was so glad he wasn't looking at her in the eyes, or in her general direction to be honest. She wouldn't have been able to bare it.

"Don't you dare, Jacob! I'm not a whore, and I certainly didn't came running for comforting." She spat right back, sadness and hurt not forgotten but certainly overshadowed by anger. How dare he claim such thing?

Bella had been at her worst when the Cullens left Forks, and she could admit that. But she never ran to anyone for comfort. She had pushed away everyone that had cared for her, and drowned in her own little world of sorrow. The reason why she had been able to pull herself out of it was because her father had threatened to send her back with her mother, and even though that wouldn't had been the end of the world to Bella, it had meant that she wouldn't be able to see the vampiric family again since she would be living in a sunny place.

Yes, it was true that she had leant onto Jacob in order to get back on her two feet, but she had never hinted any kind of relationship between the two besides friendship. Every time he had tried to take a step further, she had been sure to take a step back. He had no right to claim Bella had used him.

"Then leave, and don't show your face in here again! You are not welcome in the rez!" Bella didn't think she had shaken so badly before in her life. It felt like she was running high on adrenaline and her body would explode at any moment. She absently noticed how three other guys ―Sam, Embry and Paul, her mind supplied― were guarding Jacob's back and mumbling to each other something or other about 'phasing'. Bella had no idea what that meant, and in the back of her head she couldn't help but wonder how in the world she had been able to hear them when they were so far away from her, but she couldn't bring herself to give a fuck either.

"Was it something I did? Was it something I said? Tell me!" Bella was well aware that she shouldn't be asking such things, but she couldn't help it. Jacob was one of the few friends she still had. Bella didn't want to lose him too.

"You are pathetic! And also a dumb bitch, so I'm going to tell you just one more time. I. Hate. You." The tremors in Bella's body stopped so abruptly the boys could have thought she was suffering from a heart attack or something if they hadn't been able to hear the steady beating of her heart.

CRACK.

The metaphorical sound of her heart shattering into millions of pieces reached Bella's ears. So many and so tiny that she was sure it wouldn't be able to heal again. It hurt so much that she could almost feel the pieces cutting their way out of her chest. It was unbearable, but Bella reminded in the same place without moving a single muscle. Her face completely blank.

"You don't want to see me ever again." She repeated slowly. Her eyes glued to the floor.

"No." Jacob replied firmly.

"Fine." Bella's voice turned cold. She wiped the tears in her eyes and held her head high, locking her eyes with his. She took a deep breath and showed him the only thing she could feel right now towards him- "You won't see me EVER again, Black." Hate.

Jacob Black seemed shocked for a second. Unable to talk and lost in the brunette's eyes, before he suddenly snapped out of his daze and looked at her with pain in his eyes. He opened his mouth to say something but Bella didn't gave him enough time to say anything more, not wanting to be hurt any further. She turn her back to him and marched towards her car as quickly as she could without looking like she was running away with her tail between her legs.

"And don't you dare return here." Bella's back stiffened momentarily. Somehow, she could feel this was an order she wouldn't be able to disobey.

"Don't worry, I won't." She mumbled under my breath. It was barely a whisper but Bella was certain they heard her.

She started the engine and changed gears as fast as she could so she could get out of the reservation. Tears had already started trailing down her cheeks again. She couldn't stop them, and to be honest, Bella didn't want to. She needed to release her feelings. The ache in her heart.

The trip back home was a fast one. She didn't even felt when she arrived. After parking the car outside Charlie's house and making sure she was calm enough, Bella cleaned the tears off her face and put on a thin layer of make-up to hide her red and puffy eyes, as well as the dark circles under them; Charlie didn't need to see her like this, he had suffered enough with Bella when sparkly-ass left and she was a complete mess.

She climbed out of the driver's seat, and made her way to the door, but before she even opened it, Bella noticed that there was something off, as if... Well, she didn't really know how to describe the feeling. It simple felt like there was something wrong, Completely out of place, yet she couldn't pinpoint what it was that made her feel so uneasy.

"Dad...?" She called hesitantly as she opened the door slowly, and sneaked inside the house as silently as possible. Which was a feat alone since she was known for her clumsiness.

"We finally met." Bella's heart almost burst out of her chest at the unexpected sound, and she let out a strangled shriek. A chuckle following soon after.

"Wha-?" The brunette spun on the ball of her feet quickly trying to find the source of the sound. A man that looked a few years older than herself, maybe around his early twenties or so, was sitting on one of the armrest of the couch with his legs crossed. His skin was tanned, but not russet like the guys from the reservation, more like Bella's had become since a few weeks ago, a nice peach color. The brunette idly wondered if he lived in a sunny place like she used to. The man's hair was black, but his eyes were what stole Bella's breath and attention, and her heart skip a beat. They were a bright amber color- no, more like a bright yellow. A yellow you only saw on felines. Everything about the guy screamed DANGER and PREDATOR.

Yet Bella didn't felt afraid of him.

And as if he had heard her thoughts, he answered. "No need to be afraid, little one. I'm not here to hurt you." The man smiled at her, his smile so calming and sincere she would have been willing to trust him if she hadn't realized that it was kind of smile the one her vampire ex-boyfriend and his family had used on her many times. "My name is Leo."

"I suppose you know my name since you are in my house without an invitation, I don't see any reason in introducing myself." Bella said curtly, inching towards the door so she would be able to run if it was necessary. Her car keys were still on her jean's pocket.

"You are right." He chuckled looking amused. "But I do have an invitation." Bella frowned at this, she hadn't invited him and she was sure that if Charlie had done so, he wouldn't had left him alone at their house. "I came here to warn you."

"Warn me? About what?" She couldn't help but ask.

"You are a very smart person, Bella. You know things about this world you shouldn't, and your heritage isn't helping either. And believe me, not many people are happy with you right now. They are currently tracking you as we speak." The brunette froze, and looked at the man with incredulous eyes.

Say what?

"That's the reason why I came." Leo took Bella's hands between his, and she couldn't help but noticing his skin was abnormally hot, but it didn't bothered her. If anything, it actually felt natural, familiar even. "Come with me. They won't be able to track you down with me by your side." He pleaded sounding very much like those movies where the boyfriend proposes his girlfriend to run away together. So yeah, Bella felt very awkward right now.

"I'm sorry, but I can't." Now it was Leo's turn to frown. "I don't even know you, and if what you say is true, then my dad could be in danger. I can't do that to him." Leo's eyes softened and showed understanding.

"I understand, and I respect your decision. You have grown to be a honorable lady." Leo said with a wistful smile and a far away look in his eye. Bella silently wondered if he was actually much older than he appeared. 'Honorable Lady'? No one talked like that nowadays. "I'll do my best protecting Charlie if something happens to you." His grip on her hands tightening in the slight. "I won't stop until I get you out of there." He swore passionately, not even noticing how Bella's shoulders tensed at the mention of an unknown place that could or not be dangerous.

Bella's ears suddenly perked at the sound of a car parking outside of the house, and she immediately thought of her dad arriving home, only for her hopes to be crushed.

"It's not Charlie." Leo announced sounded distressed. "They are here."

And what the fuck was Bella supposed to do? Wait in the couch as they made her way to her home ,and then invite them in for cookies?

"Come with me." He ordered, tugging at her arm and guiding her towards the back door of the house that lead directly to the woods. She could easily hide in there, she thought. She knew her way through them fairly well, they wouldn't be able to find her if she put her mind into hiding.

But still, Charlie could be in danger if she left.

She couldn't do that to her father.

"What?" She asked hushedly.

"You need to be careful, Bella. These people... they won't hesitate to hurt you or your loved one in order to get what they want. I am begging you, please do whatever they order you to. No one will be hurt if you simply obey, I promise. I will try to get you out as soon as I can." Bella could do nothing more than to nod.

"I promise, Leo." Bella's voice expressed so much determination, it shocked her.

"Good. I'll make sure Charlie stays safe in the meantime. You'll know when it's time for me to get you." Bella nodded again.

"But wait, how would I know it?" She wondered.

"You'll just know it." The man reassured her, and motioned the brunette to answer the door after giving her a hug, and placing a small and tender kiss in her forehead.

It didn't take long for her to lose consciousness after opening the door and encountering the worst smell she had ever faced in her life and gagging at it. The man had taken one look at her before asking her name, and once they confirmed it, arms had wrapped around her immobilizing her, and a piece of cloth forced into her mouth and nose.

Her last thoughts were of Leo and his promise of saving her.

She would hold on.
