Memorial Day

by Ice

Anakin Skywalker felt utterly alone. He seemed to be the only Jedi who had ever fallen in love. For a moment, on Azure, he had been sure that Obi-Wan, his Master, had loved Siri Tachi, who had been killed on Azure. But how could Obi-Wan lose the woman he had loved and spare the man who had killed her? No, Obi-Wan had never been in love, Anakin was sure of that.

To clear his thoughts, Anakin decided to take a walk around the Temple. I t was unusually quiet: all the students were in classes; most of the Masters, Knights, and Padawans were off on some planet or another, trying to win an endless war. Before long, lost in his thoughts, Anakin wandered into a section of the Temple he had never been in before. Two wooden doors were in front of him, with a bronze plaque bearing the words:

Memorial Room

Dedicated to all those who have gone before us

Grant eternal peace unto them

Curious, Anakin pushed open the doors. The Memorial Room was quite like the Room of A Thousand Fountains, complete with waterfalls and exotic plants. The only difference was small, rounded mounds with bronze plaques similar to the one at the entryway. Anakin knelt down by nearest mound and read the inscription:

Qui-Gon Jinn

A wave of grief rushed through Anakin, and it took all of his skills to keep the tears from flowing. He stood up abruptly as the realization hit him: This is a graveyard.

So this was where the Jedi were buried.

A whimpering noise shook Anakin out of his thoughts. He turned and saw a man kneeling over a grave. Anakin would not have recognized the puffy, tear-stained face if he had not first recognized the familiar Force-signature. The man was Anakin's Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Compassion rushed through Anakin as he sat down next to his Master, and his words came naturally.

"Dad, please don't cry."

Obi-Wan was trapped in his well of grief as he knelt by Siri's grave,, and he soon understood why Qui-Gon had walked the halls of the Temple obsessively after Tahl's death. He was so locked up in his own misery that he did not notice his closest friend sit down beside him.

"Dad, please don't cry." The words that came from his Padawan seemed so amazing that they stopped Obi-Wan's tears immediately. Anakin caught Obi-Wan's gaze and held it. Compassion and empathy came across their bond.

Empathy? He can empathize with me?

Obi-Wan could almost fell the heat coming from Anakin's face.

"Padawan, is there something you need to tell me? Maybe about you and a certain Senator?" The steadiness of Obi-Wan's voice surprised even Obi-Wan.

"Is there something you need to tell me?"

Obi-Wan sighed. Anakin could be so stubborn sometimes.

So they told each other their stories. Both of them felt much better after unburdening their stories of love and forbidden marriages, but Anakin still had a few questions.

"You won't tell the Council about Padme and me, right?"

"Ani, you saved me from a terrible fate. I was planning on committing suicide,"(at this point Anakin gasped and looked stricken), "but when you called me dad and gave me compassion, well, I knew you needed me."

"So you really did love Siri," Anakin said softly.

"Yes, enough to give up my life. Now you know why Jedi are forbidden attachment, but I think you and Padme should cherish what you have. So, in answering your question, no, I will not tell the Jedi Council about your relationship with Padme. I know exactly how you feel."
