The Consequences of Training Under Vice-Admiral Garp

Being apprentices to the most insane marine known in the forces, it was not surprising that Coby and Helmeppo had been abandoned in a situation that would be difficult to survive in. It was also not surprising they had been abandoned in an area known for its large amount of pirate traffic with no way out. Luckily, the two young marines were used to their mentor's insanity and having to think up ways out of the various situations they found themselves in on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, they now found themselves located on an island that was purely rock and could be traversed in under ten minutes, and the only ships available for escape form the island kept getting destroyed in the middle of the seizure attempt. Of course that was probably because they were all pirate ships.

"Dammit, Coby! Try not to destroy this one!" The tall blonde dashed forward, kukri knives already held at the ready to either intercept or attack.

"But Helmeppo, they're pirates. I have to attack them!" The shorter of the two boys jumped into the fray with a quick soru and a plan to make his mentor proud.

"You don't have to destroy the ship to!" muscled arms swung the kukri knives in a downward slash taking out an approaching pirate. Steel soled boots dropped another of the attackers within seconds of the first's impact with the ship deck.

"I'm not trying to destroy the ships!" Coby brushed the pink strands of hair out of his face while dodging a scimitar that had gotten a bit too close. He jumped and performed a Rokushiki in the direction of a small group of enemies before leaving an indent with his fist in the face of yet another pirate trying to sneak up on him.

"Doesn't change the fact that you are!" Helmeppo's long hair seemed to float for a few moments while he ducked underneath a meaty fist from behind and a bastard sword from the front. After sliding out from between the two pirates he pushed them over the railing and into the ocean water below.

"Yeah well, look on the bright side. With the wood from this one we'll have enough good material to build our own ship." The pink-haired boy flashed a grin at the other in between evading another blade, a sabre this time, and sending an elbow into another ruffian's ribcage hard enough to damage the bone. Lightning footwork ensured he wasn't close enough to be grabbed for long.

"… You know, there are days when I wonder why you befriended me after how horrible I was…. There are even more days when I wonder why I chose to accept it." The slender teenager's apathetic expression didn't change as he watched his sempai throw the last pirate still capable of movement over his shoulder and into the air. That was going to hurt. Helmeppo signed in resignition, "I'm going to start building the boat we'll need to get off of this rock. Please try to not damage the next ship that comes by."

"But Helmeppo," the central mast cracked dangerously where the last pirate had hit it before falling into the water. The wood in and around the impact zone was shattered, no longer capable of holding up under the strains of sailing. Coby scratched the back of his head sheepishly, "… That sounds like a good idea."

Helmeppo turned and walked away into the graveyard of ships now available to build a new boat from.

Coby took up a watch position in the now demolished ship to look for more ships approaching their location.

First thing I've written in quite a while, huh? I would greatly appreciate any constructive criticism sent my way. I'm not sure how I did on the characterization; in fact I actually think I completely failed. Not having written in a while and not having much exposure to the two characters in the fic does not a good characterization make.

Thank you for reading,
