"Next!" the woman behind the sign in table yelled breaking my trance. I walked forward and handed her my application.
"Name?" she asked in a thick italian accent.
Nervous and startled I replied "Hunter...Hunter Summerlin." I was beginning to go over in my mind that maybe applying for a temporary circus job wasn't going to be a good idea, but i needed the money for college.
The woman asked another question "Age?"
This time I replied quickly "18 ma'am."
The woman went over my application again as far as I had seen I was the only 18 year old applying for the job. I mumbled "...just my luck.." and the woman smirked.
"Welcome to the Zoppé circus..." I looked at her in shock. Not only did 'Zoppé' mean circus but she was giving me the job. "Matt.." she motioned to the young man about two years older then me "...will show you where you will be staying Hunter...Welcome to the family"
Nodding a thank you I stepped in the man's direction "Hi..Ummm I'm Hunter." I reached out to shake his hand with a sweet smile.
"Matt..." he shook my outstretched hand with a slight smile "Well let me show you were you will bunk and I will bring you to meet Dhiren..." before I could ask who Dhiren was I was jogging to keep up with him.
"The circus is made up of old airplane hangers.." he explained as we walked toward the main building "...the large building is the ring or the big top, that building there houses the elephants.."
I imagined the elephants with beautiful colors pinks and blues maybe even yellows. I was barely paying attention to him as he explained the other buildings "that there is the mess house for food and that there is..." I zoned out as we reached the bunk house.
A little girl about the age of 15 stepped out to greet us "Hi there!" she was excited to meet me "I am Marie" she hugged me tight.
Laughing at her I replied "Nice to meet you Marie, I'm Hunter." Marie and Matt smiled at one another.
"Matt what will she be doing?" Marie asked him
I was wondering the same thing "Yea what is my job here?"
"Well you will be helping me sell tickets and clean up after the shows..." that sounded easy enough that I nodded as he spoke "...and helping my dad with Dhiren."
"Who is Dhiren? and what does he do?" I asked inquisitively
They both laughed at me and Matt grabbed my hand "Come on I will show you later time to clean up"
Matt showed me where the brooms and dust pans where kept, showing me where to clean up we started. I swept up everything from confetti to hot dogs and cotton candy. I started to wonder if meeting this Dhiren person was worth it or not. After we were done Matt showed me where to clean up for supper and told me I had two hours to rest.
I walked over to the empty cot claiming it my own and stuck my backpack underneath after pulling out my notebook to write. Instead I drew a picture of my parents as they held my little sister before my mother died. It had been almost a year since she pasted away. My sister, Jesse, followed along soon after both died from brain cancer. All I had left was my father in his drunken stupor.
I sighed and decided to explore the grounds a bit for it was time to eat. I left the bunk house and took the gravel path to the elephant house and found the door was locked, so I decided to walked to the next building. I seen the light on inside and wondered what the building housed and I tried to remember Matt's tour "The acrobats? No thats the big top." As i approached closer I heard a low growl...A Tiger.
